Trend Micro has scored badly in tests. In the test in Computer Shopper magazine they said Trend Micro, Norton, Mcafee gave very poor levels of protection. They recommend Steganos ( same as kaspersky but cheaper) or Kaspersky if using Vista. Steaganos uses the kaspersky engine so it's the same software but it's cheaper. It doesn't work with vista at the moment so you'll have to use kaspersky for vista. If you don't want to pay for AV they recomend AVG as it offers good protection and its free.

free AVG for good.

http://free.grisoft.com/

This is the virus sw I use on my windows machine.
I've been using it for abut two years and, statistically, is as good as Kapersky.

While I agree That AVG is a very good free AV
After being directed to it by a techie friend, I switched to AVAST (also free)and personally found it better at finding/preventing nasties on the P.C
Although to be fair when it comes to reviews it depends which site you visit on wether they find avast or AVG the best of the 2

That woud be why Trend Micro's Internet Security just wiped the board in the US beating all AVs then? :)
As for computer shopper then a statement was issued confirming the tester involved had not used a "true to life" set up which would actually give an accurate picture of the performance of Internet Security and the other AVs.
Yes there are Free AVs out there that are "ok". But sorry they just don't provide as good protection and definitely they provide little or no help if anything goes wrong - like new strains of viri or trojans infecting a machine before a fix has been created.
As far as Computer shoppers reviews are concerned then having been the other side of the fence I wouldn't give 1 penny for their so called reviews for anything any more.
Honestly - if you want to find out if it's any good then install it and run it for free for 30 days. You get full support just like if you had already bought it so long as it's installed and in the 30 days.
Just because one reviewer didn't like it and gave it a highly inaccurate review doesn't mean you should believe him. What is it they say? Don't believe everything you read ;) Try it for your self and see what you think.
And just to repeat then no I no longer work in the AV industry - in fact I am enjoying an "executive sabbatical" and I have no financial gains from recommending Trend Micros products.
Oh yeah and Trends software is Vista compatible too ;)
Anyway - don't assume that just because its not free then it isn't worth the money... I'm all for free stuff, but not when it comes to my PC security, sorry to everyone who swear by AVG etc.

Oh and to everyone who uses hotmail... You already use Trend Micro AV protection ;) Whether you realise it or not :) Hotmail is scanned using Trend Micro technology - the very same scan engine and virus pattern files as Internet Security uses...

i will agree with you tine that Trend Micro's Internet Securitys better than most (norton ,mcafee)and the free ones put not the best that has to go to bitdefender and kaspersky(it's the one i us) .
i have not had any malware or any virus of any kind since i have been using Kaspersky Internet Security ,spybot and Ad-Aware SE Personal has not found any thing since the day a put it on ,about 3month ago put it's not cheap about the same price has mcafee and norton .
the reason i buy Antivirus software is that i am on the net 24/7 and i us vista 64 .(not any work well with vista 64 )

What source are you quoting there (magazine name, website)?

No tests performed by magazines and websites can ever match or reproduce real life usage. It would take far too long to complete and you'd need every machine visiting the exact same site at exactly the same time in order to have a fair test. Then you'd have the question of what sites to go to and what emails to open - what emails do typical users open? What sites to typical users frequent? Do we test packages when using torrents and P2P websites, as not all users (but a proportion) use them? Do we test computers during the day/night or both whilst on the net? Do we connect through a wireless router? (some have inbuilt security, others don't, others use security packages from different vendors) - not everyone uses a wireless router. What version update do we use (some people still use v1, others might use v1.05)?

You see what I'm getting at. There is no "true to life" setup or typical user, its impossible. Each persons usage of the internet is unique and can't be reproduced as there are thousands of variables. Inevitably assumptions have to be made somewhere along the line about what to test and when to test it. As long as each test uses the same controlled method then this is good enough.

How would you propose a test should be conducted? What would you're "true to life" setup be?

As for little help or support regarding free packages - this is a good point. However I don't think many users will miss the free tech support. There is hardly any company I can think of (tech or not) that offers decent customer support that is worthwhile waiting for on telephone lines or via email. In fact there are many forums out there that are dedicated to products like AVG Free (in fact I think AVG have an official forum). These are staffed by users of all natures (IT Pros, amateurs, people from the software company themselves in personal or official capacity) who can offer often better solutions in a quicker time simply because they've used the software in real time and not in some kind of lab controlled nature or aren't call centre staff in India who have had about 2 weeks training on the said product and are paid £1/hr.

In fact I would argue that forum support is a lot better than official support. By posting the problem on an official forum, you're problem might get exposure to 00s or 000s of fellow users thus improving the chances of finding a correct solution. Whereas by direct email or telephone the problem might only ever reach one or a handful or people thus reducing the chances of finding a solution.

Thats my two penny worth.

Comment on Avast.

I have been recommending this but have stopped doing so for the time being.

It isn't that horrible but an expert (I won't name drop) has been doing some intensive looking into Avast! mostly because the French love it so much yet you all would be shocked at seeing how slow the folks at Alwil are in the face of newer threats.

He has been watching detections for MSN worm variants for approx. 2 months now as well as other known nasties that update often. Avast! takes anywhere from 10 to 15 days to react to new files. They aren't responding to people who upload them infected files either. The amount of infected machines showing up on French boards - with Avast! - is simply scary.

AntiVir is kicking malware very effectively compared to Avast! and samples sent to AntiVir are treated/added usually within 24-48 hours with a reply to the sender.

None of the above is based on a statistically valid study of course but I would rather see AVG, or possibly AntiVir, on a machine than Avast! at the moment.

• This thread has gone right of the rails. Its not about which is best and which is not its about Trend offering 200 free 12 months of Internet security. The which is best and which is not has been done time and time again in threads on here.
Don't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best

Just because it's free don't mean it's good

Ditch Norton Now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall:

Just Because you read it some where don't mean it's right ;)

I have been using Trend AV for several years including the latest 2007 version which I have installed now.

I have never had a virus infection on any of my PC's to date, and it has always detected and stopped any attacks.

I find it reasonably easy to use, and it is quite a comprehensive AV, with automatic daily updates, firewall, spyware, trojan detection etc., I would certainly recommend it to any potential user.
• I use Nod32. It's great, but it's not free.

EDIT at 14:34: Just to say my free copy of Trend has just arrived - got an email with a link to download the software from and a 1 year licence key. Going to stick it on my son's PC, as I only have a single licence for Nod32.
