You say this was a few years ago, how many years? CRA's show information for 6 yrs.
Would it be worth them trying for a new mobile phone contract now? Some companies allow 'sim only' deals if you fail their initial credit checks. Which means you are contracted but they haven't parted with an expensive handset, they then review it after 6 months.

You say 'got into debt', was this only with the mobile phone company or was there other debts?

You may find that your 'half decent credit rating' takes a downward turn if you financially link yourself to someone who you know has a bad credit history.

Numerous horror stories on this forum, show that financially linking yourself to someone unnecessarily, is something to steer clear of.

As said by pp, what credit have they applied for recently? This info may help people advise.

She has a phone for work that is contract but it is in my name as she got turned down, and paying for a sim-only deal is essentially just throwing away money as neither of us would use it. She got into debt with the phone company approximately 4/5 years ago.

She has been applying for things such as Littlewoods, Very.co.uk, anything that offeres you credit basically, not to buy things and splash out but specifically to purchase small items and pay them back in full straight away when the bill comes through in order to improve her credit history but as i've said, because she has a default on her credit file already, she's finding that she's being turned down for everything (and obviously being turned down is leaving further marks on her credit file making it even harder still).

As far as i am aware, the debt was not settled as she is currently paying off the remainder of what she owes.

    There lies your problem.

Don't go joint account with her on anything until that is sorted

When the contract expires in your name, discuss changing ownership of the contract to her. She would keep the handset & number but any bills going forward would be in her name. That way it's not an additional number that you won't use. They would be more likely to accept her as it is a minimal risk for them. It's a slow process to rebuild a credit file but small changes along the way can help with the overall result.
