i have signed up to post in this thread.
    i work at debenhams.
we dont push the necter card anymore because debenhams are starting their own reward scheme if you have a debenhams mastercard.
you get asked to open a store card everytime you make a purchase because the staff get £2 for every account we open. we have targets and if we dont hit them or dont ask every customer we get named and shamed (in my store anyway) most of the clothes, especially the kids are exactly the same as BHS but with a designer name put on them.
they have got rid of customer service departments because of the number of complaints. no customer service department in store=less complaints becuase staff dont record them properly.
the average cost of say a pair of jeans in the childrens department is £20, we can sell them in the sale for £5 and still make around £3 profit!!!!!!!

I dunno what debenhams store you work in but it sounds a right rubbish one!

I work in a debenhams store in the south east, we now have to ask each customer for a nectar card because now people can spend their necter points on debenhams products at the till and debenhams make profit obviously. We were never allowed to remind the customer because it costs debehnams a bit of money each time that card is swiped through the till, so thus saving money if the customer was never asked.

The downer to that is that if you have bought stuff with your nectar card and you need to return it the necter points wont get put back on your card, the value of the item will be put onto a debenhams gift card, so debenhams are winners all round really.

In our store we dont get any money for opening a card. Sometimes they will run an offer if you open a card you get a capital bond or two pound if you get one with cover.
  • I work at Debenhams as well, the only reason we've been told not to ask for Nectar cards is it is too much to keep asking different questions at the till, the main question we HAVE to ask is "Do you have a Debenhams card?, Would you like to open 1?" I find after explaining what it is etc, then asking about Nectar, they think I'm trying to sell them another card!
Also I can confirm we don't get commission, at the minute we just get a chocolate! It's just a little treat!

This can work to your advantage if you shop in ASDA. Their policy is that if they overcharge you, they will refund you and give a £2 shopping voucher for your inconvenience!
I think this may have been changed as I was overcharged the other week & was just refunded the difference.
    Winnings :D

  • You used to get the £2 automatically now you have to ask for it, I got one yesterday.

When I queried it at the customer service desk, Asda Trafford Park, I was told they stopped doing it ages ago, also you don't see the signs up saying they do it any more.

its like this at debenhams, we have a high refund percentage so they changed the policey to no refund if the item is reduced by 50% or more, refuse and you will get a full refund.

Also if you do have a Debenhams card pay with this for any item reduced by more than 50% and you get the full refund if you return it. I was told this by a sales lady and it works!
  • That used to be the case with British Home Stores, the price was the item code backwords, this was a lot of years ago now and it has been changed.

i noticed this too and so i knew whether the price had really been discounted.
some codes on clothes labels indicate the season they came out - and i've noticed clothes frm 2004 in M&S and BHS in the sale! so its best to check if you get any xmas gifts of clothes from previous sales - as you may not be able to return them. I saw this happen in Jan07 in next - the cust was rtning a scarf that was from a couple of yrs back but bought in the sale by the giver of this gift/scarf.. i think the lady was only allowed to exchange it at the sale price. just to be aware!
