    Great news, Spanish.

For the record, Halifax branches are open on saturdays, but I dont get post on saturdays to my home so would assume that post to the halifax is not delivered on saturdays either.

Also the post box would be checked on a monday as would the ATMs as it would make sense that they may have been used over the weekend, but then again its not checked daily not that is never checked...

glad its been sorted and you have been compensated and the branch learns from this incident, (note you have to learn from mistakes, so I would think they would now check in future)

I'm glad you got this sorted out to your satisfaction, and you too can learn from it in the future.

Issues like these are reasons why I beefed up my emergency plans in terms of finances-£50 odd cash (built up over several weeks by merely putting in £1 here, £5 scratchcard win there) in the house not to be touched, and slowly building up an electronic amount in a separate bank account with a separate bank- intended as hybrid emergency funds and to save up for particular purchases.

The OP quoted the manager from the branch which shows the difference.

The postie walks into the branch and hands over the mail, making the letterbox largely redundant.

    Do they?

I didn't know someone 'manned' the banks 24/7?

They must though by your logic...the postie starts his round long before anyone will be 'manning' the bank...5am (you are probably all still tucked up in bed)
So what does Mr/Ms Postie do?

Ah yes, Put it through the letter box, just like everyone else...

What was stopping your son from using your bank card to queue up and pay the cheques in himself for you?

Some machines even let you pay the cheques in without having to go to the counter at all.

PS. Not checking the post box every day is just lazy.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

I hardly ever receive post before mid day, and certainly never before 9 am. Maybe the branch has had the same experience.

That would put the OP in breach of Halifax's T&Cs around "Taking care of your card". Of course, the cheques could have been deposited using a paying in slip, assuming of course the bank was open at the time the cheques were posted through the letterbox. (Edit: it looks like the OP confirmed the branch was closed)

First you said the problem was that the letterbox had a ledge in it, then that the bank were slow to empty their box.

Are you saying that your letter was caught on the ledge, so had not properly fallen into the box inside so had not been seen, or is this purely down to the bank not bothering to check their post?

When you are first given one reason why something didn't happen (ledge in letter box) and then given a completely different one (not emptied every day) it makes you think that they are just excuses for some slip-up.

If it really is their practice not to empty it every day, then you would think that Monday, following 2 closed days, would be the one day it would be emptied without fail.

Don't know if you're still reading OP but consider the Post Office for urgent deposits in the future:

    http://www.postoffice.co.uk/banking-services#lloydstsb

You may have a PO with a later closing time than your bank.

I've paid in HSBC cheques there and absolutely no difference in clearing time.

I was told by the first staff member in the morning that the letter box had a ledge in it and the envelope was stuck on it. This "fault" was something the bank staff were aware of, and the staff member did say that they should have checked more carefully.

When I phoned back in the afternoon, no mention was made of the faulty letterbox, only that the letterbox was not emptied every day.

So, really, take your pick because Halifax's story changed. I have no way of knowing which was true, although I suspect the first.
