    Joe;

"but in blunt terms I am able to, on the PC,to get more missed TV programmes than the TV 'Demand' provides, some dating back to the 1980s so would like to get them to the TV so that my wife will be able to appreciate them too."

Do you have a DVD or BluRay player?

Many of these programmes can be found on (cheap) reissue box sets, I've seen catalogues with stuff that I'd forgotten about from the 1980s and 1970s, which I never imagined in a million years would get a reissue.

Can I suggest a google search for the stuff you're interested in, in the form of

    "(programme name)+DVD"

    or

    "(programme name)+box+set"

This may yield an easier, neater, and less technically demanding solution

Or give us an example of the type of programme you're referring to?

People are asking for your TV model - if you look on the back it will be stated there somewhere.
If you tell us that we can tell you if your TV supports Chromecast which is a little dongle-looking device you plug into the HDMI port on your TV. It costs about £30 or so.

Do you have Sky? Some Sky boxes connect to the internet so you can watch iPlayer type stuff on them.

Need a simpley solution? But cable is too short and for whatever reason you don't want to buy a longer one?
Pick up your PC tower. Place it next to your TV. Plug it into the TV!

You've got a new enough TV
We're not sure if you've got a new enough laptop - can you provide a model number for it?
If your laptop's up to it, you can buy a Chromecast for £30. It plugs into an HDMI port on the TV, plus USB or mains for power.
Then you can send your screen from your laptop over your WiFi network to it. You need to use the Chrome browser and when it's all working well, there'll just be a button at the top right of your browser. You need to install the Chromecast extension in Chrome.

Is there any means of linking/sending programme links across the 12' something room from my tower unit of PC to my TV which has broadband signal from the PC?

Joe - which catch up TV services do you have in mind? You can get a NOW TV box for £10 which you can use to watch BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD, Demand 5, etc etc. This is probably the simplest solution.

Yes there is, Chromecast can do this. Again you'll need to use the Chrome browser with the Chromecast extension installed. I THINK you will need to have WiFi on a tower PC, but you can pick up a USB dongle (I'd want an 'N' one for what you're doing, which will cost £10 or less). Same instructions as my post above. Anything you view in the Chrome browser, can be sent to the Chromecast plugged into your TV.

We're not looking for on-demand stuff:
