i would love to hear more about The Lady short story comp- would someone be able to pm me the details? not sure where ill find the time, but i reckon it can be done, especially if there is a financial incentive! :T

This sounds like a fab idea, not that I have a literature type background but I am fairly qualified as I have loads of books.

Do you have to pay to enter all these type of cometitions?

Shineyhappy, not all comps have entry fees, there are quite a few with free entry. A couple off the top of my head are:

secretattic.com/competitions (prize - free computer software)

glimmertrain.com ($700 paid for first-publication rights)

And entry fees start from as little as £1.50, most I know of are around £4.

And please remember guys - it really doesn't matter about your background or what grades you got in school... all you need is an idea for a plot, and a pen/paper/computer, and let the ideas flow. Maybe you didn't get great results in English, but creativity is the most important thing for SS writing, and that comes from the heart :heartsmil

YAY! I'd like to join in too if nobody minds. I only did standard grade english at school and started doing a higher before I had to leave school all together to get a job and support my mum. I can't write for toffee, but I've been told I have a great style to my writing and hold a good story.

The Lady magazine competition is for a story of 1,800-2,200 words in one of these genres: Comedy, Historical, Mystery or Science Fiction.

First prize: £1,000, second prize: a Waterman pen worth over £200; 5 runners up get various reference books.

Closing date is 7 October. There's instructions on how to send your entry, plus biogs of the judges, in the magazine. I've got a pdf scan of this, which I'll email it to anyone who PMs me their email address (it's about 2MB).

JCD - 'I can't write for toffee' is the biggest lie I've read on this Board! Your thread is gripping reading.

I'm glad this thread has generated some excitement, I'm itching to get writing and Lucy, if you want any help brainstorming you're bound to get lots of help here.

:wave: Hiya - can I join in too please. Always felt that I have a book in me but it seems such a mammouth task so maybe short stories / poems would be a good start.

Where do I start searching for these comps? Is the idea that we post any we come across on this thread - gosh I sound really thick, perhaps I should find something less taxing to do, like watch paint dry:rotfl:
