I can only see this change being difficult for people with issues getting out and about, but i know that they worked something out years ago when home delivery didn't exist, so something can be worked out again!
    !

Years ago friends, neighbours or carers (funded by social services) would pop to the shops for those who were unable to due to heath. I know as a kiddie i shopped for an elderly neighbour.

Social services now in some areas refuse to do shopping for anyone with an internet connection, there are even schemes to help housebound folk get online and support them to use computers (I spotted a poster in GP's). Social services is over stretched and quite rightly personal care has to take priority so i'm not sure what can be worked out.

Yes this is a problem for many housebound single friends of mine. Thankfully and selfishly for me I can make the £40 shop if I spread things out a bit and plan, others are not so lucky. Those who are disabled/ restricted mobility and living of benefits alone are worrying about this.. aldi/lidl, BandM and local markets are not a possibility for this group of people. Having this change introduced part way through the subscription does affect there budgeting and is causing some worry.

One solution is a regular 10-14 day tesco shop with a top up shop from one of the local milkmen /food and more type deliveries.

It can be a huge tricky situation.. if working on a very restricted budget with no choice to 'pop to shop'.

Some charities have volunteers who shop for groceries for elderly/disabled who have no other means to shop.

e.g. Red Cross, some AgeUK/Age Concerns, Food Train (Scotland)

I don't use the delivery saver and I do most of my shopping in Aldi and Lidl but there are a few things I can't get from them, two I can only get from Tesco, the dog food our dog likes and the sausages that I like. Funnily enough though our nearest Tesco has stopped selling the sausages. I used to buy a few packs of sausages to freeze and two or three packs of dog food and then make the order up to £25

Now to get the sausages I have to go to a Tesco that is a lot further away so I stock up on the sausages and dog food and also small tins of baked beans (which I can't get in Aldi or Lidl) but that is all I buy there now. So they have lost my small but fairly regular order.

I have opened a case with the Retail Ombudsman.

After a long and tedious process the Ombudsman's case worker did not believe that Tesco's term allowing it to make any changes to the Ts&Cs they wished amounted to an unfair term. It was recommended that I should receive a full refund of the cost of the 12-month Delivery Saver - not pro rata as mentioned in Tesco's early emails. This had been offered previously by Tesco after I raised the complaint with the Ombudsman. Others on MSE reported receiving similar without having gone to the Ombudsman. Perhaps it depended on how long the Delivery Saver had been running. Mine had only run for 5 weeks before the changes to terms were announced.

I will not be appealing the recommendation as it turns out the Retail Ombudsman's recommendations can only be binding for members and Tesco is not a member!

I see that ASDA is offering half price Anytime Delivery Passes at present for £30 pa. Note an annual pass can be paid for with monthly instalments and
"If you want to cancel your Asda Groceries Delivery Pass outside of this 14 day cooling off period or have placed an order on the Asda Groceries website, we will not be able to refund any payments we have already received for that Delivery Pass but we will not charge you for future instalments that would have fallen due."
I cannot see why anyone would choose to pay the higher monthly fee for a 6-month pass.

Also note that unlike with Tesco...
"To use your Delivery Pass you must spend £40 or more on your order on Asda Groceries. Asda reserves the right to amend this minimum basket spend at any time. If we do decide to change the minimum basket spend the change will not apply to the Delivery Passes which have already been purchased, but will apply to passes purchased subsequent to the change."
    https://groceries.asda.com/asda-webstore/pages/delivery_pass/ltr.shtml#

Sadly ASDA like Tesco has a minimum order of £40 with a Delivery Pass. However, if I was going to buy a pass I would rather it was from ASDA because it seems to be more committed to treating customers fairly as well as charging at least 10% less than Tesco for a comparable basket.
  • I grumbled long and loud when Tesco increased the minimum online spend from £25 to £40, but now I'm so grateful. I shop fortnightly now and need spend only £40 instead of £25 weekly.

With this saving of up to £10 I have a meal out every other fortnight when I'm not doing a "Click'n'Collect".

Your business awareness is utterly stupid, Tesco - but you have my thanks. I've enjoyed some nice meals out and the only cost is filling up my freezer. All thanks to you.

I tried ASDA twice but their fruit and vegetables are such awful quality, so I went back to Tesco and just did a weekly shop instead of every 6-7 days but now every 12 days or so. A lot better and like others have said cheaper in the long run.

Has anybody ordered a shop for over £40, had it delivered free with delivery saver, then rejected goods on it when it arrived therefore bringing it under the £40 threshold?

My driver told me today that I might be liable for a delivery charge as the refund will bring me under the minimum £40 basket charge.....!

Can tesco charge me for this? Or is this a good work around for the minimum basket charge?

If what you reject is a substitution, they can't charge you for a lower-than-£40 basket.

If you reject something which you ordered and they supplied, they may be able to charge? (But I've never done that so can't give a definite answer).

In any case, I now shop fortnightly with Tesco where it used to be weekly. So instead of spending £25 a week, I now spend about £40 a fortnight. Great business acumen, Tesco!

I tried once on a mistakenly ordered item, and the driver wouldn't accept it back, subs only. Makes sense, otherwise some people would try to give half of it back every time : ).
