I can see the problem with the leaded paint, but what's wrong with the magnets .... other than the obvious that they can be swallowed, stuffed in, etc. Polly Pocket is marked for ages 4+ years, with the warning that it contains small parts. I've had a look at the box (one of several put away for Christmas) and there are so many things which could be swallowed or shoved up your nose or stuffed down your ear that I would be more worried about.
At least with a magnet, you can pull it back out with a bigger magnet!!!!!

Hazard: Tiny magnets inside the dolls and accessories can fall out undetected by parents and caregivers. The magnets can be swallowed, aspirated by young children or placed by a child in their nose or ears. When more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforation, infection or blockage, which can be fatal. Aspiration to the lungs requires immediate surgery. Magnets placed in the nose or ears can cause swelling and be difficult to remove
Incidents/Injuries: CPSC is aware of 170 reports of the small magnets coming out of these recalled toys. There were three reports of serious injuries to children who swallowed more than one magnet. All three suffered intestinal perforations that required surgery. A 2-year-old child was hospitalized for seven days and a 7-year-old child was hospitalized for 12 days. An 8-year-old child was also hospitalized.
If you have any in the loft then take them back, we have 2 sets in the loft for xmas pressies i got cheap that have been recalled and 1 set my daughter is currently playing with (now took off her) , it just isnt worth the risk.0 -

Thanks, Deanos, I've just found the same on the Mattel website.
I don't know whether to do anything about it, or not. I'm sure that many would say that's an irresponsible position, and that NO risk should be taken with children ..... but I can't subscribe to that amount of risk avoidance - apart from the fact that it's pretty difficult to remove ALL risk. Otherwise I might have to throw out the climbing frame, not teach them to cook any more, cut down the trees (especially if they have conkers!), never buy balloons (in case somebody is allergic to latex). How far to go is the question.
Everybody is becoming more and more risk averse these days and the results of this on children seem to be reported in the news almost daily. Children don't climb trees, they don't play out, they never go anywhere without an adult, etc.
I might just decide to take the simple approach - here you are girls, here's your Polly Pocket. Don't shove things up your nose, in your mouth or down your ear ..... OR YOU'LL DIE. I think they might understand that!0 -
The trouble is you now know they could be a danger, if something happned you would never forgive yourself.
I guess it depends on the ages, mine is 4 and very aware about things so i would trust her , but we also have a 6month old who has just discovered crawling so its a definate no no for me.0 -
You're quite right with a little one around - no telling what a baby might do!
My Polly Pocket presents are for five year olds, where the youngest sibling is three. All of them are capable of seriously looking you straight in the eye and agreeing with the terms and conditions which have just been imposed on them ie don't stuff things up your nose!
And as for never forgiving myself, it reminds me of what the McCanns have gone through. They thought there was no problem too - poor people.0 -
Im gonna give Matell a ring in the morning , it may only be certain batches, will report back.
