Were the punctures in rear tyres? I was once told that the front tyre rolls over the nail and stands it up so that it penetrates the rear tyre.
I've had several nails in tyres over the years and they have always been rear tyres.

Three in 6 months is way above average. Are they always the same type of nail in the same place (more likely foul play if so) ? I've had no nails for years now on 2 cars.

It's just a run of bad luck, possibly caused by building work where the OP drives regularly. I had a run of 10 years or so with only 1 puncture, then 3 punctures in 6 months. There's no reason to suspect foul play.

In my case it's probably the extension work in the village hall and I might have picked up a few nails in the car park, but there's no way of knowing.

I used to do a lot of cycle racing on skinny tyres, and developed the habit of checking my bikes's tyres for embedded foreign objects before each ride. While riding I also listened for the periodic clicking that meant something was working its way into the tyre.

I also do this to some extent with my car. I check the tyres for foreign objects a couple of times a month. If I hear any kind of periodic clicking through an open window while driving, I stop at the next oportunity and try to locate the source. This saved me from a puncture due to a woodscrew once.

Always check under your tyres before going anywhere, twice i've found nails/screws propped up against one of my tyres.

That's true if you can find a place that will actually do the repair for £12. But more often than not the tyre outlets say they can't repair the tyre now; too near the edge, too near the middle, whatever takes their fancy then they try and sell you a new one.

I picked up my first puncture in many years while in France last week. Lucky, really - it happened in the morning, but the only thing to tell me was a regular tick-tick-tick as the tyre went round. It wasn't losing pressure, so I waited and asked in the hotel when we got back. There was a tyre place literally 200 yards away, they repaired it first thing the next morning, and it's done 1000 miles since with no problems. It was a 1.5" screw, bang in the middle of the tread, perfect for a mushroom repair. Cost me 25 euro, well worth it for the convenience.

Before that, I can't honestly remember the last time I had a puncture. Probably 25 years.

Hmmm, I will beat everyone (so far). My rear tyre kept on deflating slowly, so one day I took it to tyre fitting place expecting to pay for new tyre plus fitting. Turned out I had a nail, sorted out within 15 minutes, costing £5 to fix it.

Yeh will agree that some places try it on.

can be a neighbour , used to live in a small estate, most of my neighbours and me had problems with screws found in tyres ( suspect they were put under the tyre in the tread so they pierced as you drove off)

we all assumed it was the nutty woman opposite but was in the days before CCTV cameras

it stopped when I moved away

£10 to repair? £15 to repair?

How about $11.95 (plus shipping) for 10 repairs? http://tirerepairkit.com/onlineorderintl.asp :)

I have one of these kits and it works very well. I'm still on the same tyres that came with my new car 3 years / 39k miles ago, and to which one needed a puncture repair (screw/nail in the tyre) after only 2 weeks - that repair is still holding very well; never loses pressure.

In fact just last night, as I left the office, I helped someone who had a screw in their front tyre. I used the quoted kit to repair it for him. :)
