How do nails get into tyres? Surely they're lying flat on the road so how do they end up stuck in tyres?

How common is it?

I've had three in the past six months. Must admit I am beginning to suspect foul play (long story). Is it even possible to plant a nail into someones tyre?

tyre can pick them up in the tread etc as it rotates over them and then they stick in on the next rotation against the ground....

of course you can plant a nail into a tyre... hammer + nail. easy... or just place it upright under the tyre and when you move the car, it goes in.

it shouldnt be that common but it depends on where you drive. if you drive past a builders yard every day or past building sites etc then more likely.

depending on where the nail is, the tyre may be able to be repaired. Usually about £10 per tyre, but obviosuly only worth it dependent on how much life is left on the tyre
GC Jan £431.490/£480.00  £48.51 under budget!

Three in 6 months is way above average. Are they always the same type of nail in the same place (more likely foul play if so) ? I've had no nails for years now on 2 cars.

I had my first nail in a tyre. I've been driving for over 8 years. £15 to repair (thankfully, it was pretty much brand new tyre!).

Chances are that somewhere where you drive is an industrial estate and someone is careless, or there is building work going on. Roads should be swept so shouldn't be a problem over several months if some builder has dropped a box of nails out of the van, which makes me think it is a workplace problem.

£10 to repair? £15 to repair?

How about $11.95 (plus shipping) for 10 repairs? http://tirerepairkit.com/onlineorderintl.asp :)

I have one of these kits and it works very well. I'm still on the same tyres that came with my new car 3 years / 39k miles ago, and to which one needed a puncture repair (screw/nail in the tyre) after only 2 weeks - that repair is still holding very well; never loses pressure.

    ...or this one from Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-380421-Tyre-Repair-Kit/dp/B001QUN9UQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1435841521&sr=8-3&keywords=car+tyre+repair+kit#Ask

I haven't used it but it has good reviews. Someone will no doubt be along to say its illegal.

Edit - yes apparently once repaired, tyre should not be used on a public highway LOL

Not sure about the legality as I couldn't be bothered to check. I personally wouldn't use the DIY kit, I think paying for a proper repair is the much safer option.
