Hi, great article... but you're not entirely correct about Easyjet always allocating parents seats adjacent to their children without charging an extra fee for the 'privilege' lol. At the end of June, I had a big argument with another passenger on a flight between Malaga and Newcastle upon Tyne. Unknown to me before embarking, the check-in assistant had seated me and my boys, aged seven and nine, in three different locations. A pleasant male passenger offered to swap seats so that two of us could sit together but then a horrid woman came along and insisted that I move so she could occupy the window seat she had booked ("I've paid for it so I WILL sit there"). I pointed out that this would leave my lively and excited boys (a) unsupervised and (b) hence unable to view my laptop, which I had brought loaded with movies to entertain them on board. But, no, she insisted that I occupy my allocated seat, sandwiched between *her* female friend and a man who was playing Suduko. I knew what was likely to happen. I warned her! I would happily have offered to reimburse the booking fee for her seat, had she not been such a stroppy woman. Predictably, 30 minutes into the flight - amid considerable chuntering from other passengers that it was all my 'fault' because I had not paid 3 x seat selection fees to ensure we were placed together - the woman piped up: "I just cannot tolerate any more of this!" The boys had thrown crisps and then a book into her lap. She still did not want to swap seats but did not dare look me in the eye either! Eventually, the man who was playing Sudoko suggested that my older boy and I swap seats so that I could directly supervise my younger boy, who was still seated beside Horrid Woman. He offered to entertain the eldest with a few games of Sudoko! A solution, of kinds! But not my idea of a pleasant flight experience.... and that woman never glanced at me once all the way to the disembarkation haha.

I agree entirely, though, about the trick for checking a bag into the hold free of charge by offering it at check-in "to save ground crew time and free up room in the overhead lockers". It works EVERY time. We have done it repeatedly on Easyjet routes.

Once, we were late at check-in and I had a cabin bag forcibly removed at the gate... even though the overhead lockers were only partially filled. I accidentally failed to remove one 'valuable' - a black external hard drive containing all my data. I did not see it amid the black-lined suitcase. I completed the flight in terror that it would be broken. There I was, at the baggage reclaim entrance chute at Newcastle Airport, with my hands outstretched so that the case would not bang down on to the hard metal lip below. The HD was OK... just. EEK.

So your unsupervised kids threw items including a book at this woman and you think she's the horrid one for wanting the seat she'd paid for and not to be harranged ?!?!?!?!?

Pay up in future and also more importantly i think your kids need to be considerate of other people.
Spelling courtesy of the whims of auto correct...

Pet Peeves.... queues, vain people and hypocrites ..not necessarily in that order.
  • not sure this was mentioned but my favourite is that easyjet let you check into a same day earlier flight for free if there is space.

So if the 9am flight is the one you wanted, but the 6pm flight is much cheaper book that one, and show up for the 9am one. If there's space (which you check online ) just turn up and they'll stick you on the earlier one for no charge.

Re Tip #13 'Watch MSE Rose Packing like a Pro' - good clip, but I was perplexed by the minuscule plastic bag of toiletries she packed for a fortnight! How do people manage with so little?
Yes, I know you can buy some stuff at your destination, but you can't always rely on them having what you want, or indeed on the quality - and surely it depends on whereabouts in the world you're going, and these things - especially sun cream - are invariably a LOT more expensive than they are in the UK. To me, that's just an extra layer of hassle. The last thing I want when I arrive at my holiday destination is to go hunting for all the toiletries I couldn't bring in my hand luggage, only to have loads left over at the end and have to dispose of it, as neither can I bring it back.
Not very money-saving, is it? In fact it would probably be cheaper to just check in a case and be done with it.
A couple of years ago, I forgot to bring my anti-allergy eye drops on holiday to France and was charged around €16 in a pharmacy for an equivalent (I pay £2.99 at a local cut-price chemists!) Likewise paracetamol, which was around €4 a pack in France but costs only pennies over here.
In fact toiletries etc, not clothing, is the main reason for me to need to check a bag into the hold, as they're so bulky, and restrictions (spacewise and allowance-wise) are too tight to be able to pack a fortnight's-worth into hand luggage.

    * By the way - someone upthread (can't access their name at the moment) mentioned that they pack a folded canvas bag on wheels in their hand luggage on the outward flight, and only check it in on the return flight to save charges? Sorry if this sounds thick but I don't get why they need an extra bag on return only, unless of course they plan to come back with more stuff than they flew out with? (Toiletries perhaps?)

Ever been clothes shopping in Italy? ;)

I've just had to buy two suitcases. First time I've needed to check-in bags in 18yrs, and that's only because I'm moving abroad. It's going to feel very weird having anything other than hand luggage, or one case shared with my OH.
  • If you book long leg seats EasyJet give you an additional piece of hand baggage allowance for free. Max size 45 X 36 X 20cm incl all wheels and handle. This must be put under the seat in front ( but in the case of front seats in the overhead locker). Weight is unlimited. We find that we can avoid taking (and paying for) hold baggage for the small cost of 'over wing long leg seats' and it also gives you speedy boarding at no extra cost:T

Surely all the hand luggage in the XLeg room seats have to go in the overhead locker, the seats further back are the emergency exit seats. They allow luggage under the seats in front there?
  • I booked a flight in May to Amsterdam and then in October I booked the same flight for my daughter. It was cheaper than mine so thinking of the price promise I called up. After 25 minutes waiting in the queue I gave up and thought I could call back another day as I had proof that the flight had been cheaper. When I did get through today they said that it doesn't matter what I subsequently paid for my daughters ticket as the price today/now is all they will compare it against. PLEASE BE AWARE -You need to call straight away for the refund voucher because even if 2 minutes after booking the flight price changes then that is what they will compare against, NOT YOUR PHYSICAL PROOF

No they don't allow bags under the seats in exit rows or bulkhead seats, you are correct that all hand luggage in extra legroom seats has to go in the lockers (or be placed in the hold at the crew's discretion). However, the 2nd piece allowance also applies to "up front" seats, which usually includes all seats to about row 5/6 depending on the aircraft. In those seats (apart from row 1), the 2nd piece should go under the seat in front. EasyJet Plus cardholders also get this entitlement.

Correct, and they are quite clear about this in their terms (my bold):
25.3 To qualify for a refund, the lower fare must still be available for sale at the time the claim is made to Our Customer Service Team and must be for the same date, destination and Flight number as in the Booking made.
  • I have tried this today but was unable to see any FLEXI prices on the easyjet website :-(
  • I just spent 1,5 hours trying different departure airports / different destinations and different times but couldn't find a single flight on flexi
