I often go to the car boot sales in my area, but whilst I was away, I went to a car boot sale in a different town. Whilst there, I noticed someone going around buying all the brass ornaments up cheaply. Is there a market for brass at a scrap metal merchant? Would it be worth buying up any I see when I go to car boot sales, with a view to collecting a job lot to sell to a scrap metal merchant? Anyone know what the going rate for brass is?

Thanks to anyone that is able to advise.

I am trying to sell a few bits but find the thought of a real car boot daunting! (am having no luck on ebay as I can't get it to work for me!) and no luck on yahoo swapshop.
Anyone have experience with ibootsale? it seems a bit too easy and I'm slightly worried!

For the free pitch on ibootsale you can only have 25 items on at a time.I had a go with the 90 day pitch last year and sold one item for £20,I did tick haggle on the listing as I would have sold it for £10,you know like a real car boot sale haggle experience, but she just bought it for full price.
I didnt bother with it for a while as I only sold one item in the 90 days but I have just started it again and will let you know how I go this time.
It isnt busy at the moment so I expect sales will be slower than ebay BUT no fees other than paypal if you take payments that way.So if you dont sell it doesnt cost you a penny.Thats why I am giving it another go.

Really really basic question, as a seller is it universally the case that you need to bring your own table/whatever?

Most of the time but I know a couple of indoor ones where you get a table and two chairs but have never known an outdoor one to do this

It is a "boot" sale. If there are two of you, you will have all the back seat area too for your valuable cast off's. I would recommend at least trestles and an old door with a blanket thrown over it. Personally I take an 8 x 4 sheet of reinforced plywood and a couple of paste tables to flank it. Give me a pitch next to a chain link fence and I will colonise that too. I'm in the process of trying to find a "shop" style clothes rack at an affordable price (say 20 GBP).

I have seen people manage by simply throwing the said blanket(s) on the ground and plonking their stuff on top, but I would not recommend it, unless you are selling chunky stuff.that does not need close examination or careful handling. (Car spares, DIY leftovers?)

It also helps if you can give your pitch a gimmick that makes it recognisable for someone coming back at lunch time to see if they can (re)bargain on one of your "heirlooms". I've currently got a "flagpole" but anything memorable on top of the car would help.

We did our first carboot in Bristol at the weekend. We're hoping to emigrate so starting to clear the house of clutter.
Made £90 (minus a couple of cuppas and bag of chips) which we were pleased with for a first go with just garage clutter.

now we've got a bit of room in the garage we're gonna start going through the house and relocating unwanted stuff to the 'stockroom' :T

  • Few questions:-

    1. Do you need to take a table to put stuff on or is it literally out of the car boot?

    2. Do you need a clothes rail to put clothes on?

    3. What sells best? I've got clothes, tapes, VHS tapes, LPs, toys, books?

    4. How much do things sell for and should I label things?
