The chipset in that laptop is only SATA II (3gpbs) so those speeds won't be hit. The 250gb BX100 has much better write speeds than the 120 gb BX100 and can be had for £63.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
they may very well be specialists , but are using excessive parts charges to "pad" out a reasonable quote for fitting ,
with the info given on this thread , plus links to the parts (good quality and good prices) , I and others think you would be better off doing the job yourself.
you can buy a USB drive caddy or even a USB case for a few quid , and save your old drive (and contents ) , and copying what files/data you need , as you need it.
I think the price for quality parts was about £90? , that looks like a nice saving to me0 -

A good option if the OP would appreciate the extra capacity.
Personally, I would spend the extra £12 for the 250GB Samsung if I was going for the extra capacity, but the 250GB Crucial is more than adequate.0 -
Thanks all, I now have no other choice but to do the work myself as the IT shop owner has written to me saying that as "I was kind of messing them about" (not those exact words but that's what it meant), he won't be touching my Laptop.
I will happily follow your guidance concerning the parts, buy the bits/pieces and follow your fitting instructions.
Am ok (I think) for changing the sticks of RAM (saw them open the cover in the shop) but haven't got a clue where to fit the now 250Gb Samsung SSD and how to go about it.
Where can I get a download of Windows 2013 64 bits (I still have the original product code for the 2003 package).
A little more help concerning the fitting of all these parts and how to save/download Windows 2013/reload what I need would be most helpful. I possess a new 1Tb portable drive to download all my systems on it whilst I get the spanners out.
Thanks all.0 -
actually , I think the shop have refused to do the job for another reason ,
I was going to do a quick "google" to find you a youtube link showing a drive change HOWEVER, I think there might be other problems ahead.
seems that particular Tosh , has not got a std drive , and you have to change the sata cable , https://forum.toshiba.eu/showthread.php?62313-Portege-R700-155-SSD-Connector-question&p=244480#post244480
on your model , it seems a horrible job
HOWEVER , crucial are saying to use a normal drive? http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Toshiba/portege-r700-182
I think we need a reader on this forum with the same model of tosh to have a look for you

I quite understand them. You should have done all of this research before you took it to them. I too would be annoyed.
Your Office 2003 product key will not work for Office 2013.
Do you already have the SSD?0 -
Sorry Nifty. I got confused ...I have the code for Windows 7 pro 32 bits (therefore need to download from somewhere Windows 7 Pro 64 bits).
Am still abroad and will buy what is recommended early next week.0 -

The disc is in your Inbox.
You should buy one of these (£3.59) for the hard drive that comes out of the laptop. Will enable you to use it as portable storage. Takes a couple of minutes to put together.
You should buy the recommended RAM from Crucial.0 -
Firstly, is there any point in doing all of this at the moment? You probably would find it easier to do all this work on the release of Windows 10 to avoid re-installing Windows just to do it all again in a few weeks.
Secondly, have we established that you need to purchase anything yet? (i.e. have you checked how many programs you have installed, defragged the machine?)
It is entirely possible that, as you said earlier, being one of the many people in this country with little to no knowledge of IT, you are running a PC that performs terribly because you aren't aware of the basic housekeeping tasks.
An SSD would improve the loading time of Windows (assuming you install windows onto the SSD) and would do the same for any other program you install on the SSD. But is the loading time of your applications really an issue? I'd highly recommend completing some easy to do clean up tasks before you start buying SSD's or anything else.
Liken it to a home. When you use the dishes, they sit on the side waiting to be cleaned. You could go to a shop and buy new dishes, which you can then use without any effort. Or you could wash the dishes to be re-used again.
Am I wrong in thinking that Windows 10 will provide a 64 bit and 32 bit installer to all that qualify for a free upgrade?0
