32-bit versions of Windows can only "see" and use about 3.6GB of RAM, whereas 64-bit versions can see and use much more.

just for info, you can patch W32bit (some 32bit server versions of WIndows support this natively) to use PAE extensions to give 64GB but some drivers are unstable, namely Intel graphics if I remember correctly.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

yes, I'm aware, but for most practical purposes and users this wouldn't normally apply...the OP is struggling a bit as it is....

Yes I am struggling ...... thanks for playing it easy.

I have been to the IT shop and they are going to "up-grade" my existing Laptop as follows:

    RAM
    At the moment I have 2 x 2GB sticks. They propose to upgrade to 1 x 4GB new stick + 1 x 2GB existing stick = @£40
They were clean telling me that my 3i CPU usage is only 55%
    Windows 7 Pro
to upgrade from 32 bits to 64 bits version = @£40 This will allow me to download Windows 10 when it arrives (I have since registered).
    SSD
To install a 120xyz SSD (can't remember the denomination hence xyz) = @£50

    Total upgrade cost = £140

I will also purchase separately Office 2013 (cost ??) I only use Xcell, Words and PowerPoint that will allow me to "translate" my Office 365 Emails into my favoured Outlook.

Have I done well or what? ;-)

You don't need more RAM. But you can buy a 4GB RAM module for £21 to £27. In other words you can upgrade to 8GB RAM for much the same price as quoted. I'd give you a tenner for the discarded 2 x 2GB.

It costs nothing to upgrade to 64 bit, as you don't need a new licence.

SSD price is about right for a Samsung EVO.

You can do these very simple jobs for yourself.

Correction, contrary to what I said, am not being charged for the 64 bit Windows Pro as I already have the licence. Will do that about RAM upgrade and will happily deal with you for the 2 x 2GB in Laptop. Thanks all.

Example here or you can buy the 2 x 4GB from Crucial for £45.59

The advice here was free and impartial, a shops isn't.

If it's not fully clear, there is nothing wrong with your machine specs as they are now, nothing wrong with the speed that a re-install won't cure, the compatibility issues mentioned in the first post are misunderstandings, and more ram won't make any difference.

The way you are headed with this shop hardware and software upgrade, you could have bought a new machine, they don't all cost £682. The cpu usage at 55% is meaningless and no basis on which the decide whether it needs upgrading.

Hi bsod thanks for comments. I'm going to spend £100 at the shop and £40 for replacing the RAM. I will also need to buy the new Office 2013 (£100 I think).

That's £240, Do you really think I can get a suitable reliable 14" Laptop for so little money?

does your works subscribe to the Microsoft Home Use Program? If so, you could get a copy of Office 2013 for £10 (plus £10 if you want a copy of the installation DVD, which is always a good idea IMHO). It's well worth asking about it....

You have already got one, presumably 14"

You seem determined to throw some money at it when you don't need to, there is no point repeating what has already been said.
