Setanta Sports cancellation fiasco

Setanta's terms & conditions allow for them to insist that cancellation be given in writing, but in reality I think customers draw their conclusions about customer service based on the ease of resolving issues, rather than surveying the smallprint of a contract.

If a business insists, however, that terms & conditions are precisely followed, then customers quite reasonably expect them to meet their own obligations under the contract. In Setanta's case, I think that the minimum requirement is that if they decline to accept cancellations by phone, then they must have sufficient resources in place to process the higher volume of letters that result, within the notice period, and cease demanding/taking payments that are not due.

In my case, a cancellation letter has finally been processed by Setanta after 10 weeks.

My second observation, is that if a business puts up a barrier, as to how it wishes to communicate with its customers, then it should expect the customer to do the same. I ignored all requests to telephone Setanta, because I figured they wanted the cancellation in writing, they got it in writing, so why should I trouble myself to telephone them in return, at my own expense?

Sorry to bring back a fortnight old thread but I think it might be better than starting a new one.

My Setanta cancellation fiasco took so many phone calls to sort out that I ended up making £11.50 in calls to Setanta. As the whole thing was entirely their fault, is it possible for me to claim this money back from them? If so, how should I go about this? I called consumer direct and they told me to send them a letter, is there much point? How would you do it?

I don't understand. Surely "internet access" isn't the right place to ask about this?

There are only 3 categories to choose from.

    Home Phone
    Internet Access
    Mobile Phones

And if you look in the Internet board, there are plenty of threads on Virgin/Setanta etc. Just trying to get you more replies. :)

  • hi there, my son has just been trying to cancel his Setanta Sports subsc. He phoned 08712003322 (bet thats a high rate premium number!) he was asked if he would like to continue at a cheaper subscription, but declined and was then transfered to the cancellation dept... that kept him waiting for ages, so what do you do, hang up as its costing loads to wait, and end up not cancelling, or wait, he waited ONLY to be told he MUST write to Setanta Sports. P.O. Box 8544. Sunderland. SR9 9X2. So please dont bother phoning them use the address above, but make sure it goes recorded or even registered so they cant say they didnt get it. Put in the cancellation letter your account number and also the words 'I am revoking authority for use on my credit card........' We did ring the credit card MBNA to ask how Setanta can still take out money from his credit card even though my son has not activated his new card with MBNA. Apparantly the card number is all that is needed for Setanta to continue with this, MBNA could not cancel the monthly pament
Setanta would have to do this. The only way you could guarantee no more money being taken from your credit card is if it has been lost or stolen and you phone the credit card company to have a complete new card issued. Of course you would then have to notify everyone else who you have a monthly/quarterly or even yearly subscription with BUT NOT SETANTA SPORTS....:T But of course still send the letter to them.
This info is of course about credit cards, Im sure with a bank account direct debit you should be able to cancel it online or at your bank...fingers crossed.

Setanta Sports Direct Number 01915013601. Used previously and saves a fortune on their 0870 Number

I find this thread a bit weird and I might just be being really paranoid (being watching too much BB :rotfl:) but a lot of these posts are by people who have posted just a few messages and all joined around the same time nov/dec 2007 or have only just joined? It's odd. It might just be a coincedence (sp?) but I never see threads like this and I spend ALOT of time looking at threads on MSE :rotfl: Anyway just thought it was weird :D
