I like my 'lawn'. Uncut for long enough to lose the cat in it, full of red and white clover, white mallow, poppies, cornflowers, itinerant foxgloves, herb Robert clumps, bumblebees and Leafcutter bees chomping through the roses.

Weeds are what makes it special. :)

That's my hubbie's get out for not mowing the lawn :D
Never again will the wolf get so close to my door

I got told about being shouted at to keep doing it, despite the grass being full of baby frogs, because people would think he was loosed to sit around all day doing nothing.

Meh. He can sit around all he likes. I prefer the weeds.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

It,s easy for all of us to feel envy at times but I wonder if part of your resentment isn't secretly directed at your partner because although between you you have the financial potential to save up and eventually be able to move into into a house with a garden for your childrens' benefit it's his stubborness in refusing plan for the longer term future which is really the cause of your frustration. It does rather sound as if you and your partner aren't really trying to row your domestic boat in the same direction here and perhaps this is the root cause of your envy of your friend's possessions. So you feel that he really is not wholehearted in wanting to provide his family with the best environment he can and that perhaps he is not as ambitious as you would have hoped?
