Not sure about either of those options.
The only possibility that I can see is a Returns fraud - someone bought a genuine iPad from JL, then returned the box with the fake in it and obtained a refund. Whoever received the return did not check it properly, and it was subsequently re-sold.
Negligence on the part of JL, rather than fraud, and even that is a stretch in terms of plausibility.
I was actually wondering if JL would be able to check via serial number to see whether that ipad has been sold & returned, thinking - like you - that possibly someone had returned a fake while keeping the real one.
I've never seen/heard of a fake apple tablet but I imagine if that is the case, applie will indeed be interested. They copyright their products/brand for a reason.
I also imagine Apple should be able to tell if the real device has been registered/linked to an itunes account and how long ago - if the registration date was prior to the date the OP's parents supposedly purchased it, it could help them greatly. Apple won't be able to disclose who its registered to (at least not to JL or the OP/OP's parents) but they might be willing to write a letter stating the device was registered on x date and that they can confirm it is not registered to OP's parents or anyone with a similar name/address).You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
They naively assumed they had to have the latest and felt persuaded to splash out. On reflection they realised that they could have a previous edition iPad for less which on their pensions was more affordable to them. They are very indecisive! And easily taken on by smart sakes people.
They took off the cellophane covering of the box which was sealed is that what you mean? There was no other seals as such e.g stickers etc
So did the box have stickers on the box you use a knife to cut them to get in the box.
Was the box by any chance opened by the staff in front of your parents ?0 -

Hmm, a very strange story . .0

They had it 4 days and you can't say it was never out their sight. Look closer to home. No you parents are non the wiser but someone else is.0

((soon realised that they did not actually need such an extravagance and could have easily made do with a lesser model. They were after all not very technologically aware and realised they would not need the features of the latest device. ))
A judgement was made without even switching on the product as to the features .
No mention of the seal on the box ??
While that may be the case, none of it is relevant to the fact that the product is a fake. Had it been a real iPad with the correct serial number then the buyers would have been entitled to return it to JL for a full refund for whatever reason they wanted because that's what JL offer (and is therefore a good reason to buy from them).0 -
Do we know if the iPad is a 'fake' or just a different serial number from the one shown on the box and receipt?
If you type the serial number of both the iPad and the serial number shown on the box into this web page then what does it say?

If the 'fake' ipad is switched on then does it work. If its not a fake and just a serial number mismatch then you still have an iPad that can be used.0 -
They took it home and left in a drawer. Out of curiosity they took off the cellophane off the box and looked at the device but I'm now told that's all they did. The screen film is still there and they never set it up as they wouldn't have a clue. They were waiting for me to do this for them.
Do Apple products come with cellophane on the boxes ? I've had several Apple devices and none had cellophane.0 -
