I am in a mess and don't know what to do

  • I wasn't feeling well enough to give you all the details the other day so I apologise.

A few things I had been working on sorting out before the accident have now been sorted.

I found a couple of old building society books for before I was married that still had a some money in them. I thought they had been sorted when I changed my name but obviously missed them. I visited the relevant places with my marriage certificate and the have now changed name and allowed me to withdraw from them and then the accounts were closed. The total added up to £273 as interest had been added all these years.

I have been waiting for DWP to sort out some benefits that they underpaid me a while ago. They sent me a letter back in May saying they were looking into it all and found that I had been placed in the wrong group when I was claiming Incapacity Benefit. I didn't know any different as you believe what the letter tells you. The letter said once it was all checked they would be in touch regarding amount owed. I was expecting them to come back to me and say they had paid me too much! but on checking the bank account at beginning of this week, they had paid £4289 into the account. A letter has just arrived in the post and they have paid me money owed back in 2010 plus they have decided that I was on the wrong level of DLA so they have backdated that as well. They obviously completely screwed up my claims. I am going to ring them this morning and check that it all sorted now, as I don't want any more surprises from them.

It was a nice surprise and immediately transferred it over to the 2 cards that had the smallest balance. So I am just left with 2 cards now that will still take awhile to pay off.

Didn't want to give all the details of what my plans were until I had the money

And there's me thinking you had sold a kidney:rotfl:

It's good that you have received a lump sum, and have been able to pay off a couple of the card.

But there's still a large sum of money needed to clear all your debts, so the advice given previously is still relevant.

Brilliant news that you got a lump sum to clear a chunk of the debts off.
And that you checked back through your old bank accounts and found a few pennies in there too.

Will the amount you get for DLA now increase from what was in your original SOA as that would be a great help for you too

    Debt-free and Proud!
    Excellent news Use!!!

This means that you have freed up £200 that you can put towards other cards. According to the snowball calculator, you'll be debt free by Jan 2019 - 43 months away.

I strongly recommend that you set up a standing order for this amount to the highest apr card - you can cancel it at any time, but it will get you committed to reducing this debt.

    Well done!

I agree . Some great advice on here even for someone not in that level of debt but just trying to make ends meet. Valeting the car got me and the window cleaning then they came back with the excuses. The undies from M&S then said their mum paid. All clues . Maybe uselessnow you should reread you own posts;) If you were in need of help you would have been more eager to cut up the cards and let your OH and parents know what you are going through.

As I said, take everything you read with a pinch of salt. If you believe everything you read, hear, or see, you are vulnerable to scamming. That's not to say I don't believe anything. There are a lot of genuine people on here, people who desperately need help, and people who are willing to give their time to help. But every so often, usually on a long drawn out thread, something doesn't add up. Spasmodic posts from the OP justifying their spending, and miraculously finding money they forgot about, does not sound to me like they are in dire straits.

I maybe wrong, maybe they just haven't had their lightbulb moment. Or, they have limited internet access which accounts for their infrequent posts.

There are others on here that know a lot more than me about debt busting, they give more concise answers than I can. I read more than I comment, often watching events unfold, and feel sad when all the efforts people put into helping someone is largely ignored.

Just my thoughts. I have things to do today.
