    Hi Helen

we booked into the Haven site at Filey last July and had a great time. We booked it in advance through the Caravan Club and saved a packet. They also allow dogs. It was a lovely clean well run touring site with the added advantage of the park entertainment. Be warned not all Haven sites are the same the same year we booked into the Weymouth site and it was absolutely diabolical, badly run and very dirty. Hope this helps.

  • With the bad weather, and summer coming to a close, now is a great time to pick up camping gear at reduced prices. You will be ready and raring to go in the spring.
Buy the best you can afford, or a starter pack from the bigger shops and upgrade at the end of each season, make sure you are warm at night and dry in the day and you will discover a cheap holiday for life.
To get real value for money look after your equipment, dry the tent before you pack it up each time, and check poles etc are in.

Ive only ever been camping twice before, so dont know much about any good campsites. Im hoping to go camping over the Bank Hol W'end, either around North Wales area or somewhere in the North West.

Does anyone know any good campsites that I can go, where I can take 2 dogs (one of which doesnt really like other dogs near her, so ideally we dont want to be close to any other campers!).

We were thinking of just driving and finding a field (not necessarily a campsite!) somewhere and pitching up!! (Is this allowed) ?

    Hope you can help :)

Hi there its expensive but well worth it

  • Yeah agree.....we've used Camping Cheques several times and always found good savings. TIP: look out for the free nights offers (eg stay 11 nights, pay 7 Cheques etc). they can add up to BIG savings , esp on a long trip.
Best to plan your route and cross reference the info given with the campsite reviews on www.alanrogers.com .
Alan Rogers want you to buy their campsite guide books (we have a copy in the car) but you can read all the info online for FREE, no registration. Nice!!

Worth investigating memebrship of the big clubs too...they can come in useful.
Hit the open road...! :j
  • I think the first thing you have to do is join the Caravan Club for just over £30 and then use their CL's (Certified Locations). There are loads all over the country and can only allow 5 caravans (members only) and some can charge as little a s £2 a night. They also run caravan rallies at weekends and holidays and again the prices can be reasonable because they do a block booking.

Does anyone know roughly how much it costs to hire a motorhome for a week. I've never done this before but thought it might be nice to drive along the coast vsiting areas in this country we have never seen before.

We have hired a motorhome for Sept 10-17 costing £647 inclusive of service charge £150.00 from http://www.brownhills.co.uk/.

Really looking forward to it, intend travelling around the Lake District.

  • Caravan club do a credit card which offers free site night vouchers for any of their sites. If you spend a lot on a credit card it is worth having. You can use the vouchers at any time of year and they are valid for 2 adults plus your caravan or camper van. They have greatest value on the more expensive sites at the height of the season. We had six vouchers which we used on the Crystal Palace site at Easter thus saving ourselves just over £120! That site is also very convenient for getting into London as there is a bus from the site to Piccadilly Circus.
Like another member we have also saved money on insurance in the past.

Rallies are a great way to go camping for very little money. UKCampsite.co.uk do them as do the Camping and Caravanning Club and the Caravan Club. One particular site with a pool in S Wales is expensive during the school holiday but the C&CC have a rally there for £6 a night per unit (staying in the rally field but full use of facilities). Worth paying the £30 odd fee to join the club if you make use of their rallies. Cheapest one we have done was with UKCampsite, £3.75 per night per unit (no electric).
We don't really like rallies but we do enjoy going on the ukcampsite meets as generally they are on sites with EHU. The web site also offers a number of goods with discounts.

There is a fantastic camping site near Harlech called Shell Island. It's huge, and can only be accessed across a tidal causeway. They allow dogs and you have the choice of pitching in the fields or amongst the dunes. It tends to get busy at weekends, so if you are travelling around, try mid week. £7 a night per person. Beware of the green loos (the cleaners can't keep up at busy times) and the nudist beach a mile or so down the beach towards Barmouth. www.shellisland.co.uk No caravans or bikers allowed, and it has its own pub.

just got back from here last week £140 2 adults 4 kids for the week
    great site
