This could be a great thread apart from the fact I haven't a tent or caravan :(

So.. Does anyone have any money saving tips for those static caravan sites? Everywhere I look seems to want around £800 for a week!

    Thanks

    Hi Matt

Just booked a week in Woolacombe Bay Devon circa £300 end of August. I thought that was pretty good. They are doing a deal whereby if you book by 17 Aug you get 7 nights for the price of 3. Think my hol was supposed to cost over £500 so lady said on phone. They also have other sites in the area, web address is woolacombe.com (tel - 01271 870343).

    Hope you find info useful.

We've just returned from camping in Northumberland, cost £5 per night, 2 adults and as many children under 18 as you have. This was a temporary holiday site with no facilities, but virtually all caravans have all the facilities you need anyway
Join http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk for £33 per year, monthly magazine, huge book of campsites in UK, and loads of special offers

It is also worth noting that this £33 a year saves you paying the pitch fee (around £5 a night per pitch) so 7 nights away a year saves you this membership fee, any more and you are in profit.

Ive only ever been camping twice before, so dont know much about any good campsites. Im hoping to go camping over the Bank Hol W'end, either around North Wales area or somewhere in the North West.

Does anyone know any good campsites that I can go, where I can take 2 dogs (one of which doesnt really like other dogs near her, so ideally we dont want to be close to any other campers!).

We were thinking of just driving and finding a field (not necessarily a campsite!) somewhere and pitching up!! (Is this allowed) ?

    Hope you can help :)

I was just thinking the same!

I looked at the West Wayland website mentioned earlier in this thread and they do statics for £280.00 in August. The site also gets good reviews at www.ukcamspites.co.uk.

Also a couple of others I've stayed at:

    http://www.trevairtouringpark.co.uk/ - near Penzance - statics £290.00 in August

http://www.stday.co.uk/index.htm - near Redruth - statics from £335.00 in August

Both are fairly small, quiet sites which I would visit again.

No, you cant just pitch up in a field and you might struggle to find a campsite for bank hol weekend at this stage. If you go for the farm type campsites with just a field and basic facilities you might find somehwhere.

Not in England, but it you want to head a bit further north though, it is legal in Scotland (generally) so long as you apply a bit of common sense. You're expected to have minimum impact on the land, so don't destroy the area, take your rubbish away with you, try not to pitch where you'll be an eyesore, etc.

Google for "wild camping" and you'll find possibly too much information on the subject. (-:

If you have an airbed, consider a cheap air compressor http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/7500572.htm!

If you have an airbed and you're camping in a tent, consider putting it on Freecycle and getting an inflating camping mat. After years of putting up with leaky airbeds that are ice cold, deflate in the night and catapult your partner into the air every time you turn over, I bit the bullet and bought a pair of mats. I've never looked back, they're exponentially more comfortable and just better in every way.

Am I allowed to plug brands here? I picked up a couple of Fat Airics from Alpkit and they're (in my opinion) better than the 'well known leading brand' at a fraction of the cost. And they've got a sale on at the moment so they're even cheaper (-: Good company to deal with too, my order came with a little hand-written note saying 'hope you enjoy the holiday' or something similar, which was a nice touch I thought.

Probably not luxury - but the whole lot for £10 can't be bad!
  • The Camping & Caravanning Club also has Its own insurance for camping equipment and caravans which is often markedly cheaper than elsewhere. Also if one of your family is over 55 you can get a "Seasoned Camper" discount at there sites and others of a couple of quid off a night.

One of the really good moves of The Camping & Caravanning Club this year has been to team up with "Forest Holidays" - the Forestry Commission camping sites . They are situated in the midst of the most Stunning Country side in Great Britain - with Woodland and Forest walks literally on your camping doorstep. These sites mostly have good washing and shower facilities often with electrical hook ups as well. Earlier this year in Sunny April - now a distant memory ! - we were staying at one of these sites for circa £8 night for the two of us in our little caravan - yet we were within 1/4 hour drive from the centre of Southampton for retail therapy, Movies and restaurants. Brilliant time.
