I would hope that some kind of limit is imposed to discourage the !!!!less from breeding to stay on benefit. Any change brought in should not be restrospective in my opinion as that would impact most on the kids.
My basic rule is, and always has been, "Don't have what you can't afford".

trust me NO one can ever afford to have kids, mine are 27 and 31 both married and both cost me ££ still

Being a parent doesn't stop when a person reaches 18.

When I was in my 20's and 30's (1980's & 1990's) me & my husband (51 & 56) were always having to help out our parents financially - how times have changed. They are no longer with us as they were born in the 1920's. We have two teens and the only thing I want for them is that we have provided for ourselves so that we do not rely on them. On the other side of the coin I have a friend the same age as me & have seen her 84 year old father topping up her petrol with a petrol can!

We clearly don't know your kid's circumstances, but at some stage they are going to have to learn to stand on their own feet. Maybe you should encourage them to make that time sooner rather than later?
My next door neighbour has 2 sons. One earning far more than the other and with similar family situations. Guess which one is always around pleading poverty?

In order to cope with the financial crisis, tax credits and other benefits will be limited to three children.
There will be in 2016 a national lottery to pick which three.

Would be nice if they limited it to one child, but that won't happen, I don't see why the govt should pay towards the upkeep of a lifestyle choice.

If you can't afford them keep your pants on.

They certainly have. Student grants have long gone and loans instead obviously mean debts.

The "job for life" - with moderate pay - has gone. Zero hour contracts; longer benefit sanction periods and no payment at all as opposed to the 20% or 40% reduction of old for 6 weeks; sanctions for things that would never be sanctioned previously; longer periods between spells of employment; benefit cuts; benefit denials etc

Obviously today's "children" in their 20s and 30s, even 40s, are more likely to need some additional level of support that "yesterday's" didn't need.
