Confused Regarding Rejection

Hi All,

This isn't a moan about not getting a job, it's more about case of being overqualified for it. Today I got a call from the company to say I had been rejected but the HR lady strongly advised me to apply for another role which seems a little more senior but the deadline is midnight tonight. Is this normal procedure?

I think you need to stop worrying about whether it's normal procedure and start working on your application for the more senior role, only 9 hours till the deadline!

It might be not standard but it certainly happens. They have to follow a procedure for recruitment probably which includes for the candidate to apply through the website so if you are willing to go for the role, start working on it :P

    Yes it happens.

People leaving jobs causes problems (aka costs money) and so companies generally dont want to recruit over qualified people because they wont stick around as soon as they find more appropriate work for their experience/ qualifications etc.

If you get the CV of someone that looks good but is overqualified for what you need it isnt uncommon to feed it back to HR and see if there are other jobs that may be more suitable. If there are they may offer you an interview for that/ invite you to apply. If there isnt it goes back to the hiring manager to decide if they will consider an overqualified person or decline them

It happens, sometime I have interviewed candidates who looked great on paper, but during the face to face interview discover that they wouldn't be suited to that role but another.

Most recently I paused the interview and dragged in the head of another dept in, as the candidate was a slot in for a role in that dept.

It actually happened to me quite a few years ago. I got a call from the IT manager at the place I'd applied to for a job. Same situation as the OP, over qualified for the job I'd gone for but was I interested in a different job on a higher grade and more money. Obviously I had to think long and hard about it :-)

It's a funny one, what happens if you go through the process again and still get nothing? Unless this is a wink, wink situation??

I've not been given the wink.

The application form takes around three hours to complete and then another interview is 90 minutes which is a big commitment to not secure and job.

This is not very common in my experience, but I see it as a very good sign. Perhaps they had a lot of applicants for the first role, and decided that you were just the person for this other job.

I hope that you will not read this until your application is in!

    4.5 hours, a big commitment?
