Confused Regarding Rejection

Looking into the role further, it seems its over the position I failed to get. The lady from HR is giving me feedback said I gave a very good interview but it was a strong field which makes little sense when she has stated to apply for this higher position.0

I don't understand why the company didn't offer you the alternative role? Why ask you to re-employment and waste time going through the same process??0
-
Sounds like the company are messing you about, you were rejected for a job as "the field was strong," however they've encouraged you to try go for a more senior role. Help me out on this??0

a more appropriate candidate for the lower job from a strong field may have had different attributes (cheaper, judged more likely to stay, ...)
I would see it as very positive they asked you to apply - but its a different role so will have its own competition. if youdon't get you also (IMHO) have the right to call in and ask for feedback from HR which might be helpful (or a waste of time)I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour

Thanks everyone for your responses, I'm not sure of all the answers as I've not been in this situation before hence my post.
I know the company expressed some concern initially regarding my previous salary in comparison to what they were offering which was a little less. However I didn't mind the drop as it was a job, it had prospects and was in a new sector for me.
Feedback to my initial interview was that I performed very well but it was a strong field and would I consider applying for this alternative role? The feedback was done on the phone as the lady wanted to advise me of the alternative role in time as by the time my rejection letter arrived the role would be closed.0 -

Fair point, however where is the sense in declining the OP for the initial job and asking them to apply right on the deadline for a different more "senior" role only to reject them again?0 -

Maybe they genuinely thought OP interviewed well and was a good fit for the new job
Maybe they just knew the deadline was soon and offered it up as it didnt cost them anything to do so and they dont care about 5 hours from the applicant
Maybe they get rewarded on how many applicants they get for each job and were boosting their bonus, by asking all applicants for job 1 to do the same
HOWEVER For me the clincher was the call to OP that it would be too late by the time they had written to her - they really didn't have to do that so they had a reason for asking and IMHO that can only be good newsI think I saw you in an ice cream parlour

Maybe they were not happy with the applications received to date and giving themselves another option

Good points again, I'm watching this with interest, keep us updated OP.0 -
Any feedback as of yet? I'm still not sure why HR called instead of a member of the management team.0
