Turned away from the screening of Lion on Tues.....already full when we got there.0

I would walk out if I didn't know the film had subtitles. I avoided considering going to the lion previews because it said some subtitles.
It's not however because I "just don't like reading subtitles" but because it's rare that I can actually read them or read them fast enough and I'm sure others would hate me having a companion read them out loud.0 -

Re the Subtitles.... I have never seen anyone leave if the whole film is in French/Spanish/German so why here I can't ans. that. No one left in todays screening.
Without the spoiler I felt sick at one point as well enough to close my eyes so I think it must have been at this point some guys could not take it and left.
Are you talking about "FREE PREVIEWS" or films where the audience would have PAID to watch?
Until LION, I don't think I've actually been to a FREE screening of a subtitled film where some of the audience HAVE NOT left because of the subtitles. They frequently mumble and grumble quite loudly as they leave about a "waste of time" and "wouldn't have bothered IF we'd known" - sometimes after just a few minutes, sometimes after 30 minutes or an hour.
This is the main reason that I always check and highlight the fact on Codes Only if/when I make any post regarding such a film.

My eyesight isn't the best ...
(I know I need an eye test - haven't had one since the "LETTER wall chart" in Junior school over 50 years ago - I can still easily read a number plate at the required distance but it isn't "sharp" and there is a noticeable difference between each eye when using one at a time)
... but I didn't have any trouble with LION and I sat in the very back row - think there's 15 rows in that cinema - so probably at least 60 feet to the screen.
I agree sometimes you do have to be quick but generally I find enough time and once I've started getting in to it, concentrating relatively hard on them at the outset, I then relax somewhat and having got into the "habit" I've often "forgot" that they are there and I'm reading them "subconsciously". (and I believe in my peripheral vision)

Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) - brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanised the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

I was at the same viewing of Lion as Quoia and really enjoyed the film. Was quite surprised to read that there were subtitles as I must've read them subconciously....just checked with DH and he was amazed I hadn't noticed!0

The subtitles were for just about the entirety of the first half of the film.
Not sure if there were any in the second half, if so they were few and far between.
Having said that, my recollection is the subtitles were mostly (individually) not excessively lengthy, complicated or "wordy".
After all one side of most conversations was that of a 5 year old boy.
I thought the subtitles actually "enhanced" the situation somewhat - "highlighting" the difficulty of Indians communicating with each other - a foreigner in his own country - due to the language barrier - one speaking Hindi and the other(s) Bengali
Agree that it's possible to forget that the subtitles are there whilst still (not consciously) reading them.
On the "other" note ...
... did you encounter the incident in the foyer on the way out?

Almost...moved here as a kid about 45 years ago. Now I live a mile up the hill from the cinema.
Yes, I did see the lady collapsed in the foyer, but she was being attended to by a lot of people so it seemed a bit voyeuristic to hang around...hope she was OK though.0 -
we was members of the sun perks until it stopped and we used to get free tickets to screenings of films before there release. do ant other sites do this or has anyone taken over the running of the free pre release film screenings.0

If you go to codes thread, the 2nd post (by me) has the current sites that issue tickets. Presently it is mainly SFF and subscription sites.0 -
Have all the tickets for Hidden Figures actually gone, or has it not gone live yet?0
