Currys misselling - laptop

Hi everyone,

After my old laptop broke down over the weekend, I run to my local Currys to buy a new one. I was recommended Toshiba bundle, containing antivirus, Microsoft office and cloud. My budget was maximum £300 and the bundle in the shop was £299.99. I am not technical person at all so after the salesman suggested I can have it all set up in store for £10, I thought it is a worth paying so little for the service.
On Monday at work I mentioned what I bought and people started telling me that this laptop is really bad, that I should return it while I can and someone offered to give me their spare laptop they don't use. I run to the shop straight after work and ask for refund. My request was met with an aggressive - ' what do you mean you don't want this laptop anymore???'. I was totally taken aback, as the shop is plastered with signs - ' have you changed your mind?' suggesting that it is ok to return products within acceptable period. The manager was called in, he took me aside, told me that there is no way I can get a refund as the software has been installed on my name and the computer is mine full stop. The staff was looking at me in such a way that I left nearly in tears.
I went home, started analysing everything and decided to write a complaint. Only then I scanned my till receipt and looked at the company website and to my disbelief I discovered that the laptop bundle advertised clearly in store as 299.99 cost in fact 268.99! and the set up cost not £10 but £45! They put the price of a laptop bundle up falsely to make the set up cost look very cheap and attractive, they never mentioned to me that once everything is set up I cant return the item at all. I was raging with anger. Every time I go to stupid Primark and buy pair of knickers for £1 I am being reminded that this is non refundable item. how come when I spend over £300 in Currys, no one bothers to inform me about it?
Not only they manipulate the price of a products so a client go for service that is in fact over 4 times more expensive than they claim, they hide information so a client makes decisions he/she would not normally make!
First of all, if the real price was quoted of 268.99 and the real price of set up in store provided of £45 I would never go for set up in store. That's just too expensive. Even if I bought this laptop, I would not had it set up straight away so would still be able to retun computer to the store the next day.
Even if I didn't return the computer, I would have paid 268.99 as I should have.
if I had been told the computer is non refundable after being set up, I would again - never had it set up without checking it first.
argh...I am so angry.
especially that I wrote a complaint straight away and got a response from customer services, that basically its my fault for not knowing Currys returns policy as they are available in the store and online, so I should have read it before purchase.
The price manipulation was explain to me as a discount provided by the store can you imagine??? a discount!!!!! The shop put the price up from 268.99 to 299.99 to hide the set up cost and now they are trying to convince me I got a discount...
Jesus I am fuming..

Is there anything anyone can suggest I can do?
and please be careful yourself!

Don't get so het up about the relative costs and worry about 'price manipulation' - you were happy to pay the price for the bundle.
The cost splitting is a VAT 'fiddle' - VAT is charged at a higher rate on the laptop than on the setup service, so Currys split it like that on the receipt, even though they told you differently. The sale sassistant might not even have known that that is how it would be presented on the receipt.
You say the price of the 'service' is "is in fact over 4 times more expensive", but then they have discounted the price of the laptop...

Also, why listen to people telling you what they think about your laptop ? They don't own it and haven't used it - I would personally say that any laptop costing around £300 would be perfectly suited for the majority of people, some might need more CPU power or RAM, but the vast vast majority who just do a bit of streaming, go on the Internet and write a few documents would be perfectly happy with this machine. This is from the viewpoint of someone who has worked in IT for 20 years and has over that time set up hundreds of laptops (and no, I don't work for Currys or any store).

Why didn't you do any research first? Or now? Before I buy I research for days or longer and just cause someone at work said it's no good, do some research find out for yourself. What one person don't like another raves abt.

I would definitely advise you try and calm down a bit, you seem to have got far too worked up.
  • 1. You were happy with the price - it seems quite a fair price actually
    2. You didn't ask the people at work BEFORE you bought a laptop; which might have been a sensible thing
    3. The people at work would probably struggle to find a laptop at the price you wanted, for what they thought was 'good'
    4. It's probably not as bad as you think - make sure to upgrade to Windows 10 (free I believe) as soon as you can.
    5. There is no automatic right to return stuff you buy unless it is faulty.

Calm down - you've bought a budget laptop, you've got a budget laptop. It's a decent brand, it'll be fine for what you're likely to need it for

I suggest you use your new laptop and ignore what other people have said. It'd too late now, you bought it without doing any research, your fault, no-one elses.

It'll be the C50-B-14D (I think?). It's 2.2GHz Celeron, 4GB Ram, 500GB HDD. It's very underpowered, and only really any use as a browser/basic word processor.
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
    Now 20% cooler

I wouldn't have said there's anything to be gained by more commenting on the purchase, unless the OP tells us precisely what they will be using the laptop for. Any £300 quid laptop will be adequate for the majority of users.

But as for the price stated of £268.99, it'll be this one : http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/toshiba-satellite-c50-b-14d-essential-bundle-10028807-pdt.html

Which is what most people use their laptops for, so it will likely be adequate. Browsing / streaming and writing documents.
