Parents have only got themselves to blame. It didn't happen in their day and, if they didn't pay for it, it wouldn't happen now.

We had a 6th-form party at one of the hotels in town, but I don't remember anybody wearing more than a dress bought at Top Shop. And we were all dropped off and picked up by our dads - none of this limo business.

Yup, sounds like exactly what we had - there was a bar as for the upper 6th most were 18. Lots of silly dancing, a few arguments and tears and generally a standard teenage night out.

  • I don't think proms are anything new, my school had a prom in the 90's (and it was called a prom as well, not a formal or anything like that).

What I don't like is the increasing cost, having to dress up often in designer clothes and hire limos etc, it feels like it won't be long until it's escalated into something like the MTV show My Super Sweet Sixteen (if it hasn't already!).

My primary school had a prom in the 90's. No limos or anything like that though; it was just held in the gym hall.

I walked past my local primary school the other day and there was a group of kids and parents outside; the kids all dressed up in suits and prom dresses etc, and there were two huge limos there as well.

Ohh the memories.... I didn't pay to be in the prom party... I was just given a ticket by one of my mates and went to the venue ( not wearing a dress, just normal going out clothes). In my home country, the whole class chooses a venue, usually a very posh disco, and sell the tickets or give them away to friends.
Have dinner with headmaster, teachers and parents, then wave them bye bye and everyone arrives on a buss dancing. The venue is full of teenagers and young adults and then you.. just dance/ drink till 5-6 am... One of the best days of my life.

The pressure was to have a boyfriend by the Prom. The drinking age in NJ is 21 and if you were caught drinking at a High School Prom you would be in a lot of trouble. Like detention until the end of the school year.

Not the same here, by the sounds of it. They even serve alcohol at a school disco

DS had a prom 3 years ago, the suit and shoes came in handy for wedding/funeral/6th form party.

Im dreading DD's next year. Someone I work with spent £400 on a dress!

My daughter had a sale dress for her prom and looked very nice. I made it quite clear that spending ridiculous amounts to impress her (very rich) friends was neither moral nor prudent. I do not in any way, shape or form approve of the introduction of the American 'Prom' into the English school system. A bit of fun, yes, but not the commercialised vanity affair which rewards the pretty, the popular and the rich at the expense of everyone else.

For prom dresses try Oxfam Bridal if you're lucky enough to have one locally. Probably pre-owned but you can expect them to be in good condition and they won't break the bank.
