Where I am there have been "Debs" at the end of senior school forever. FGS I even had one, and I'm no spring chicken!

That was a relatively sedate affair though, as our teachers, some of whom were lovely nuns attended and watched us with a beady eye all through the proceedings. But the rebels, including me, headed out the back for a fag and a swig, as you do. Great night. Lovely blue dress, and I brought the love of my life as my guest. But he went to Australia. Boo Hoo.

They are a rite of passage. But Prom? I never heard it called that before I looked at US clothing websites!

I just wish these end of year things were called something other than "Proms", then I could live with it.

Honestly, to me a Prom was a thing that went out into the sea, and had candy floss for sale amongst other things on that prom!!

Anyway at the rate things are going it will be " My Big Fat xxx Prom" before too long. It's the bling, and the competition. There will be a TV show yet!

We weren't allowed a prom because we were a unruly lot, so we went and got drunk on a field and I believe there were a few fights and the police were called.... maybe that's why we weren't allowed a prom.

You sound like my type of gal :rotfl:
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

We had a 6th-form party at one of the hotels in town, but I don't remember anybody wearing more than a dress bought at Top Shop. And we were all dropped off and picked up by our dads - none of this limo business.

It's celebrity culture. They think they're going to the Oscars :rotfl:

I'm so glad we didn't have this back when I was at school. The thought of dressing up like that ^^ fills me with horror. Surely it's not to everyone's taste.. but I expect a lot of kids will still feel pressured to go.

The drinking is concerning, too. Should they be encouraging this?

The hall at the place where I work has been hired for nursery graduations a couple of times. I couldn't believe it the first time they asked!

I have been surprised at this new development at some of the Nurseries who feed primary school. I have seen photos of children in a cap and gown during "show and tell".

The pressure was to have a boyfriend by the Prom. The drinking age in NJ is 21 and if you were caught drinking at a High School Prom you would be in a lot of trouble. Like detention until the end of the school year.

I graduated from uni around the same time as my niece "graduated" from nursery. Of course it takes a while for the official university photos to be printed and sent so for a while my mums mantelpiece was covered in graduation cards with a photo of a 4 year old in cap and gown in the centre. Confused the life out of a few visitors who didn't realise the cards were for me.
