Can anyone explain to me why a Sports Coach, full time, part time or currently not coaching, can't get insurance?

Much higher risk for underwriting. Many insurers will either not insure or charge more.

But they could be a Sports Coach in a school, college or university. It's just another name for a PE or games teacher!?

    Even in above instance ^^^^^^^^?
When they are fundamentally a school teacher?

But I am not currently employed as a sports coach... The details I provided at the time were correct. Surely this is only an issue if I return to coaching? At which point I will call them to inform them of a change in my circumstances.

That would make them a teacher

They can't say you weren't on cover but then make a charge for cover.

Not necessarily. I coached in schools and colleges before my injury but am not a teacher.

To an Insurer in this situation they would generally class you the same as a teacher.

That's what I thought. Also they said to me on the phone that the policy was cancelled...

    1. Like you say, how can they make a charge if it wasn't active?
    2. Why do they have to cancel a policy if it was never active?
    3. How did it show on the DVLA database?
    4. Surley I would have gotten an email to say the policy had been cancelled, which I haven't.

I think they were hoping I would say OK so they could cancel the policy on the fly.

If you had not been on cover and the policy had not been cancelled with no charges I would have said just leave the matter.

As they've cancelled the cover you will have this on your record and are also out of pocket so it's worth writing an "Official Complaint" which they're duty bound to investigate properly and report back to you within eight weeks. You then get the opportunity to go to the Ombudsman if you're still not happy.

The key to successful complaint letters is to try and keep them as concise as possible, avoid rambling and being to emotional. Ensure you stick to the facts and outline what outcome you would like.

Convincing them and the Ombudsman you're not a sports coach now that your brother has told them you're a sports coach won't be that easy.

The reason they quoted your brother for you earlier in the day with declaring you're a sports coach is probably because the company you're dealing with is not an Insurer but a broker / agent who specialise in Motor Homes and have a scheme. They tend to have a few companies on their books and it's possible the company they quoted your brother did not have a problem with sports coaches.

Was the quote your brother obtained with your occupation declared as a sports coach more expensive or cheaper than the quote you took out?

Was it the same agent/broker he contacted as you took cover out with?

I never told them I was a sports coach though. They are acting on the statement of someone other than myself. In that case anyone could call up and make statements about anyone!

The earlier quote was more expensive.
