Hi 1sttimer,
A raclette is an electric gadget for cooking at the table. I think it's named after a traditional Swiss ? cheese dish. There's a griddle on the top where everyone can cook their own meat, fish, vegetables etc and a lot of small grill trays which fit underneath for making individual side dishes.
I think the idea is that you put various ingredients...cooked potatoes, cheese, mushrooms, peppers, veg, bread etc on the table and let everyone get on with making their own concoctions. Some machines are also suitable for making pancakes.
I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like fun and something my kids will love.
Hopefully someone who has one will come along soon with a better explanation.

Its a french and swiss device for cooking at the table.
It is mainly used with cheese ( but i started this thread to find out what other foods i could cook on it too)
You make little meals on it in a create your own type of way.
think of it a little like a fondue but with much more scope and you use if for meals or in my case breakfast, lunch dinner or dessert as anything can go really.
not very good at explaining things lol hope that helped a bitStill TryingGrocery challenge July 2016

Thanks for this information - it does sound good and I'd like to have a try at it first before buying one - apart from going to France to try it (which sounds like a good plan LOL), does anyone know of any restaurant who uses one?
I suppose if I got one offered for £8 like you Angelraesunshine, I think I would just get one and try it out at home!"It is always the best policy to speak the truth-unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar." - Jerome K Jerome0 -

Oooh didn't know there were so many other raclette fans out there - we had one at home from the early 90's and always had raclette parties. We'd have lots of bowls of chopped meat, sauces, salad, bread, eggs etc etc laid out over the table and mix and match - for those who've not used one its like a fondue only instead of a pot of oil you cook on a little grill. Need to replace mine as we killed it!:heart2: Mumma to DD 13yrs, DD 11yrs & DS 3 yrs. :heart2:0
