When I was little and right through my teens there was a coal

house then an outside toilet ..then there was a building

that was called either the out house by men or the wash house

by women ...My mother used to have a berco boiler thing and boil

all the whites then transfer them to the twin tub in the kitchen

to be washed ......Now this might only be oldies like me that we

used to have pride in hanging our real nappies out on the line

white as white can be all pegged neatly in a row ....

Now I don't know why my dil and a few others don't just buy

every thing grey cos after the first wash they are either

    white -grey
    pink -grey
    yellow -grey

the only time they are the original colour is before they are

    washed

and sadly white is my fave colour for my dgd so I keep a few

    whites at mine for her

I always wash my whites separately underperky. :)

DD1 was very good at uni and used to split her clothes and they came back just as good as they went. DD2 on the other hand exactly as you say, white vest tops now grey. White towels now pink. Everything gets chucked in together.

I know her course is full on and she doesn't get much time between studying and being at the hospital but I don't think it looks very good. :o

That's a funny name if she no coal. :)

She kept things like lawnmower, spade, rake etc in there, so shed would have been a better name.

I have just thought of a memory of the out house / wash house

the chapel at the bottom of our street closed and with my brothers we took the organ from the chapel all the way home on two bogies and when the pipes wouldn't fit in the wash house my brothers swiftly sawed through the pipes to drag it into the wash house where it entertained us for many months
