I wold not give this info to a US company who pretends to be in Luxembourg to avoid taxes - if they are dishonest about their sales data and location, do you trust them with your data? To sell a few books? Tell them to take a hike.
One of the reasons for the required update in information is precisely because they are changing the way they pay tax in Europe. They are now going to be paying tax individually in each European member state.
I don't know which part of "their sales data and location" has been dishonest.

I fail to see how that is connected with holding your ID's and not providing answering the questions BB brought up.

I still sell on Amazon, and am now verified but no sensitive data was given to them. Everyone knows about where they're based and the whole tax thing. I wouldn't say it's not a reason to trust them, they still have to go by the data protection act which means data should be safe. I've never had any issues with Amazon having my data at all nor can I remember reading about any major issues with Amazon (unlike various other sites!).

Not wanting to pay loads in taxes doesn't mean they can't be trusted with data, they're very different issues in my opinion.

It looks like I'm scuppered. For my bank details I uploaded a copy of the only paper statement I receive- a credit card bill, and it has been declined. They want a current account statement instead.

My problem is that my two major accounts do not issue paper statements, and if I download a copy it does not show my address, so according to Amazon rules will not suffice. I called Amazon and they said I need to call the bank and ask them to send a paper bill or a bank letter confirming that my details are correct. Both my banks won't to make a charge for this , I can't even get a paper statement without paying £5.

For 3 sales over 2 years it isn't worth me paying to ID myself, so I am going to leave it. If the bank send me anything at all in writing I will upload that, but I tend to only get yearly 'catch up' type bank letters. I suppose if I get any advertising letter I could try that- but I suspect that won't be good enough either.

I went through this on a new account for a separate company a while back and I was asked for a few things. I had some that were rejected and ended up getting so frustrated at what they needed that I uploaded the first documents that were rejected. They then accepted them and never mentioned anything else again!

Just googling throws up massive incidents of passwords posted online of Amazon account holders. Heartbleed breached Amazon and was one of worst breaches of last year.

I forgot about that Heartbleed thing, but that wasn't an attack on Amazon or any specifc site.

Amazon Web Service says it updated what was needed in order to be protected from the Heartbleed bug and advised people to update Linux images to protect themselves. It was only certain areas though anyway. Many sites say Amazon was not affected by it.

From what I can see, any security attacks and password leaks have been against a big list of companies/sites. Amazon was mentioned in a hackers tweet, but I can't find anything from Amazon confirming it, just sites saying to change your passwords on a long list of sites. The main news was on Microsoft and Sony who appear to have been hit the worst.

Any site can be hacked though. Doesn't mean a site can't be trusted. They've still got more security than other sites and do their best to fix things asap when an attack such as the Heartbleed bug is possible. Aside from massive attacks on various big companies, they do keep data safe.

Data that hackers want is already on Amazon anyhow. Giving them your passport information won't make any difference, it's of no use to any hackers. They can get your email, password and bank details and that's what they care about. None of that is on a passport.

I decided to walk into town and go into my bank and ask them about ID. They have agreed to send me a single paper statement free of charge, as that should be OK for Amazon. Apparently I am not the first person who has had this difficulty.

Fly On the Wall. That's your view. Mine is that passports do matter, they have Birth dates. Great information for identity fraudsters etc
