BOS refund cheque

Hi all,
Today I have received a letter/cheque through the post from the Bank of Scotland. It reads as follows...

In 2005, we applied a charge of £50 to your [Name of Finance Company] account ending #### when we arranged a transfer of your debt from blah to blah which we should not have charged you. I'm sorry that we applied these types of transfer charges in the past and this is to let you know that we are committed to putting this right, by refunding the fee and making a compensation payment to you.

Your Payment

We have credited your account with this refund and a cheque for £50.00 is included below to cover any distress and inconvienience this may have caused you.

This payment covers your refund and compensates for any distress and inconvenience the charging of these fees may have caused you. We're aware that some customers may have incurred other costs when the fees were charged, for example where you may have borrowed funds to cover the payments, or incurred charges, so please get in touch if you were also affected in this way.

To contact us about this letter please call us on blah or visit your Halifax or BOS branch where a member of staff will be happy to help.

Yours sincerely
Harry Singh
Credit Operations Director.

Long story short... I took a loan out years ago and a cheque was sent via courier and I was asked to sign docs on my own property with the courier. The courier provided no docs and just handed over a cheque which I banked. From that day I never made one payment and was never contacted by anyone in regards to paying, obviously no dd mandate was signed.
Obviously I am well over the statute barred finish line but is this letter/cheque some kind of trap? I have moved property since so they must of really gone out of their way to find me.. How generous?!?

What do you think guys?

Hi im a newbie, i received a letter two weeks ago included was a cheque for £140, i wasnt complaining. I found the old paperwork relating to the loan and it seemed to tie up, , i was happy with the compensation. I think BOS are reviewing their accounts, as im chasing preference accounts and otherloan ppis now.

I received one of these letters yesterday. Phoned BOS complaints and it is first they had heard of it and said it sounds suspicious with Natwest cheque on BOS heading.

BOS have had sight of this letter on Twitter (@AskBankOfScot) and tweeted
"This letter seems genuine. If you're worried, it'd be best going to your local branch with the letter. Hope this helps. ^DA"

No explanation as to why a Nat West cheque on BOS letterhead but this might be the last piece in the puzzle "In March 2000, The Royal Bank of Scotland Group completed the acquisition of NatWest"

Bank of Scotland and The Royal Bank of Scotland are not the same thing.

BoS is part of Lloyds, whereas Natwest are part of RBS Group.
