Marriage Allowance

After the show last week I applied for marriage allowance as i currently do not earn enough to pay tax from august 16. I received an email saying i was eligible. My husband received a cheque for 202.00 and i received a bill from the tax office saying i owed them 212.00. On completion of my application i received an email confirming eligibilty also stating claiming HMRC will check your eligibility before processing your application. Now we had to cash the cheque and pay it back to hmrc. I rang them and they said that I owed them the money because I applied for the marriage allowance so the whole process just cost me 10.00
£212 implies that this has nothing to do with August 16. What was your total taxable income for 2015/16 and are you a UK resident for tax purposes?0 -

If your circumstances only changed this (tax) year why did you apply for an earlier tax year?
Have you looked at the rules for revoking your application, you may be able to save yourself the £10 by cancelling the Marriage Allowance for 2015:16
Are you certain you will benefit this year, the tax year is April to April so what happened from August is only part of the picture0 -

This seems to back up your earlier comments about the tax law rules for this as Annette has successfully applied despite her income being at least £10600 in 2015:16.
The HMRC may say your income needs to be less than the Personal Allowance but this clearly doesn't actually stop you making a successful claim0 -
I applied for the marriage tax allowance last week. Today I received a letter saying I had paid too little tax and owe HMRC £213.80. My husband received a letter saying he had paid too much tax and HMRC owes him £212.00 ! Seems a bit of a con... we're £1.80 worse off for applying! Anyone got an explanation??0

Anyone got an explanation??
You didn't bother checking if it was beneficial to claim before actually going ahead and claiming?
Your figures suggest you were a basic rate payer in 2015:16 so why did you apply?????0 -

Ask N HMRC agents about something, get N+1 different opinions
The latest "£11,000 or less" HMRC official advice - wrong advice - may not have spread through HMRC yet. It's a shambles.0 -
Hi,
I filled for marriage allowance as it showed on the show, however they are saying my partner has underpayed and owes money on taxes, we are both employed by big companies and I only went back to work after having 2 children back in March. Can this be right?0 -

You'd have to give as a lot of information about your partner's assessment in order for us to give a meaningful comment.0 -

If you are claiming MA for 2015/16 then your partner would ordinarily receive a rebate of £212 for that tax year. If, however, your partner owes tax for that year then either the rebate will be reduced or the tax liability will be reduced by £212 depending on the amount of tax owed. (I'm assuming you didn't pay tax in 2015/16 but your partner did.)Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Hello everyone. My wife's thinking of applying for MA as she is staying with our son, so has no income at all and we fit all criteria except one - I'm not sure if I'm a basic tax rate payer. My salary roughly is 44k, but I'm making pension deductions (about 2k) which are taken before taxing. So does this mean that I'm on a basic rate or on a higher?0
