Marriage Allowance

YOU never will get a cheque, by applying for this you are giving away some of your own tax allowance, your husband may be entitled to a cheque but it all depends which year(s) you applied for and what his tax situation is like.0

Hi,
Perviously myself and husband were both over the thresholds for the allowance, however I've been on maternity leave since the beginning of June 2016 and so I think I will now be under the threshold. Will I be able to apply for the allowance for 2016-17?
I think I'll probably be just over the threshold again once I go back to work part time so just wondered if I'd be able to do it just for the past year?
Thanks0 -
My parents were both born before 1935 so are eligible for the more generous married couples allowance. Oddly you cannot apply for this online but must ring up.
Does anyone have experience of claiming this - I presume they adjust tax codes rather than sending a cheque out. It says you only need details of dates of birth and marriage details - but surely they will require more ID etc?

My parents are both slightly deaf so cannot use the phone easily so I will need to do it on their behalf.
PS You might think they would make the process easier for those in their mid to late 80s than for young people?0 -

Adjusted tax codes will only resolve things for this tax year and the future, refunds for earlier tax years would be by cheque.
Are you quite sure they haven't already claimed, possibly many years ago?0 -
Hi all
I work full time via PAYE, but also have rental income, so fill in a tax return.
Wife applied last year to transfer to me. Both our tax codes were changed, so this year and going forward it is being taken care of via PAYE.
I originally thought i would get a cheque for last year, but when it didn't come, i contacted HMRC who said i wouldn't get one and it would be taken care of via my tax return.
That wasn't ideal for me, as my brother and I pay our rental income tax bills out of the joint account we have for our rental properties, so my refund would get swallowed up in just reducing our joint tax bill, rather than being paid direct to me.
Well i submitted my wife and I's tax returns last night, firstly hers, which showed the reduction in personal allowance in her calculation, then mine. There was no increase in my personal allowance shown and the tax payable (now paid) is as i would expect for the rental income. I assume this is because the system would have needed to process my wifes return before crediting me?
So what happens now? I've effectively paid too much tax, will i now get a cheque, a card refund back to the card i paid the tax with (rental account) or a bank transfer to my personal account as given on my tax return?
Thanks

As the lower earner I applied for this a few weeks ago and my husband's salary showed an updated code last week, However, there seems to be no sign of the money for last year which I understand should have been paid in a cheque to him. I've just been trying to get answers from HMRC online chat and he kept telling me that my husband has to apply again to get last years refund but that is certainly not how I understood the system or how it is explained on here. On the HMRC page it says my status for 2015-2016 is "Applied for Marriage Allowance retrospectively" Can anyone tell me if my husband will have to apply again for last year's allowance?0

Your husband does not apply for the allowance. You apply to transfer it to him.
Any repayment due for 2015/16 will be due to your husband,
You cannot get information about your husband's tax unless he has authorised it with HMRC.
Your husband will need to ask HMRC what is happening about last year but 'a few weeks' at this time of year may not be long enough for it to be processed yet.0 -

One the system updates the credit for the transfer of marriage allowance will show as a credit on your statement of account.
If you have already paid the full amount it will be available to claim repayment. It will not be repaid automatically.0 -

If your husband has not received a refund as a result of your transfer then he should apply to HMRC for a repayment of overpaid tax in the 2015/16 tax year. It is possible, for example, that he owed some tax for that year and HMRC has taken the money from the refund he otherwise could have expected.Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
