Hello everyone. My wife's thinking of applying for MA as she is staying with our son, so has no income at all and we fit all criteria except one - I'm not sure if I'm a basic tax rate payer. My salary roughly is 44k, but I'm making pension deductions (about 2k) which are taken before taxing. So does this mean that I'm on a basic rate or on a higher?
It'll be a close-run thing but apply anyway.

You should get a decision, one way or the other, regarding 2015/16 if all the numbers are in at HMRC but you may have to wait for a decision for 2016/17.

  • I applied for the Marriage Allowance some months ago & received an
email back saying that yes I was eligible to receive it but as of yet nothing has happened, should I contact them or wait until I get my new tax code ?.

If you applied for the first time this year then your partner should have received a refund of up to £212 for the 2015/16 tax year and both your tax codes should have changed by 110 for this year (2016/17).

If none of this has happened then it might be worth contacting HMRC to get a progress update.

Was this a transfer from you to your spouse/partner or vice versa?
  • Hello everyone. My wife went and tried to apply for marriage allowance at HMRC website. And one of the questions was "To be eligible for Marriage Allowance, your partner must earn between £11,001 and £43,000 a year. This is their income figure before any tax is deducted.", which doesn't seem to be the case for me. Though it's still not clear to me is it with the pension deducted or not. Still confused

The £43,000 figure is the income at which higher-rate tax becomes payable. Pension contributions from your taxable income are not taxed. i.e. deduct pension contributions from your taxable income and if that's below £43,000 in the tax year, your wife should be eligible to claim MA.

  • OK been reading articles on this site for years - super useful,. But my first post...

I just wanted to know if anyone could clarity some info for me (if you'd rather not hear background for my question skip straight to last paragraph, otherwise read on),..

I got married recently (late 2016) and although marriage is obviously about more than a tax code it was the thing that gave us the final push.. After years of working life, my partner of 14 years mentally couldn't continue because of extreme stress/anxiety he has from some bad employers (long story), where he had to leave for his own sanity.. After his initial 6 months, we had no extra income for him as I work more than 16 hours, and have struggled on and made do with my modest salary alone for years with no help - I don't mind, as it was better than watching someone I love go insane and we just manage, but has been super difficult, especially watching those around me occasionally spoilt themselves, just wasting money and have leisure facilities we just cant afford even though I work full time.. However it is what it is and my mans sanity is my priority in life!

In previous years have just watched policy after policy making our tight finances more difficult, not knowing how we would manage - but are super careful and have managed, without getting into any debt and keeping up with bills - when I sit back and look at our finances each month have no idea how we do it, but we do.

Anyway when we seen the marriage allowance was being introduced immediately decided we should get married, it was the first policy for years that could finally help us - after all the first years tax relief would pay for a very basic wedding, then we would be pounds in each year. We were going to marry in 2015, but then I realised my parents had an extra special Anniversary in 2016 and so after much debate (as wanted the extra pounds asap) decided to take the hit for 1 year and wait, so as to make the day a little more special. It was my choice and also a way of making my elderly parents celebrate their day.

We married a few months ago and the following week my new husband called the tax office to ask them to move some of his allowance to me. They done it really quickly and so easy to do - by my next payslip had the change plus they had backdated Tax it till April - although it isn't a lot, we were super happy and my new husband finally felt he was contributing something towards the household income in his own way.

Anyway to get to my point, today have been reading the tread on this and seen the comment about how the tax can be backdated to 2015 and a cheque would be issued for any previous year. I didn't expect for 2015 and am assuming that we did not get this because we only married in 2016 and so not eligible in 2015 and comfortable with that - as the wait was my choice. However I don't like to just assume and just wondering if someone could confirm this is the case, as I wouldn't want to miss out just on an assumption.

    Many Thanks for any advice

To qualify for the Marriage Allowance Transfer, you must have been in a married/civil partnered state for at least one day during the tax year concerned.

If that was the question buried in that post :)

  • My Husband called up to transfer his to me and I got a confirmation in the post within a week - would call them. The person transferring the allowance will need to be the one who calls x
