Is your income net of any benefits you get before tax e.g. child care vouchers, pension, cycle to work. I'm on 46000 then taking off c£3000 for child care vouchers and pensions contribution my pay before tax is below the threshold - am I eligible? My partners is in 8k

    Hello,
Maybe this is a bit of a stupid question, but if I don't try I won't get it anyway.
Me and my wife are not eligible for this scheme in this tax year since my wife started working again this year, but we were eligible during 2015/2016 because she didn't work. I know they can backdate any claims so that's good. Problem is, we only get married a couple of months ago so during the tax year 2016/2017. Can we I still apply for marriage allowance for 2015/2016, even though we weren't married then but we are married now?
Many thanks for your help in advance.

As I understand it, if you were married during the tax year then you can claim the allowance for that tax year. You were not married during the 2015/16 tax year so you will not qualify for that year.

If in doubt, always claim anyway; HMRC will soon tell you if you don't qualify for any reason.

  • Hi all.

My Wife and I recently started claiming marriage allowance, and we received a cheque for 1 months back payment before my wages changed for the allowance too. But I was wondering how far back can we claim for the back dated payment. My wife has been out of work for nearly 3 years since giving birth to our daughter. I'd be surprised to backdate that far, but I thought more than a month would be possible.
I hope someone can help out there.

You can claim back to the 2015/16 tax year when the allowance was first introduced.

  • Thank you for that.

How can I do this. Do I have to ring them, or can it be done online?

The donor can claim online. See <HMRC>.

  • Does that include if we have already made a claim?

Thank you! I actually phoned the HMRC. They said I could claim it back. They also said something that's not on the website. They informed that as long as you lived as 1 unit, so living together, you were eligible for marriage allowance. You didn't necessarily have to be married to get it.
  • Thank you. What number did you use if you dont mind me asking
