  • my wife has just filled the form in online and I receive an email to confirm.

will I get the whole £212 for this tax year.

I presume whatever I get will be via a cheque as the end of the tax year is only days away.

I am also guessing that I will be £17-£18 a month better of when HMRC and my employer talk to each other.

    Correct me if i'm wrong
  • Morning,
Quick word of warning..... I applied for the marriage allowance as I earn under £10600 and transferred my allowance to my husband.
Today I have been hit with £220 tax on my wage :-(
When I called them up they told me as I had transferred £1060 to my husband my tax code had gone down to 954n and I had just earnt that last month therefore as its calculated it from April 2015 it took all the tax in one go.
Not happy at all! I will of course get it back but they said not until around June time.
They told me if you earn over £9540 it's not worth applying.

Are you sure you'll get it back? What was your total pay for the tax year and what was the total tax deducted?

It's not correct that it's not worth applying, you can still save something depending on circumstances eg

    Adult 1 earns £10,000 - will pay £92 tax
    Adult 2 earns £20,000 - will save £212 tax

So an overall tax saving of £120. Surely saving something is better than nothing?

Of course it's worth it. Don't forget your husband should get a year's refund as well.

Marriage allowance only started in 2015/16.

You won't get a refund if you haven't paid anything yet. There would be nothing to refund.

It will be taken into account when you do your return.
