Marriage Allowance

I'm a little confused about the back dating rules and hope somebody can clarify for me. I have just called the Tax Office and applied for the allowance and have been told that new coding notices will be sent to both my wife and I within the next couple of weeks. So far so good.
However, when I asked about backdating it for last year (2015/2016) they told me I'm too late as it can only be backdated until the beginning of the current tax year, which as we know is today. They said I have the option of sending in a written application to the PAYE Self Assessment Office and they will consider my request. Using the term 'apply' sounds to me as though they could deny my application and refuse to back date it
I thought I could go back four years although I do realise that it only started last year so my maximum claim can be for one year. If anybody could shed any light on this I would be grateful.0 -
My wife and I no longer live together, but are still married.
Can we claim marriage tax allowance0 -
. . . I thought I could go back four years although I do realise that it only started last year so my maximum clain can be for one year. If anybody could shed any light on this I would be grateful.
You will, in the future, be able to go back to the 2015/16 tax year, as I understand it.Q. What's this about £432, haven't you always said £212?
The marriage tax allowance started on 6 April 2015, and in year 1 was worth £212. For the new tax year starting today, it's worth £220. Plus claim it now and it's backdated so many get last year's AND this year's allowance - £432.
Edit
From <HMRC website> :-If you were eligible for Marriage Allowance in the 2015 to 2016 tax year, you can backdate your claim to 6 April 2015.Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Thanks Consumerist. I'll get my application sent off and see where it takes me.0

Thank you that does help, we do meet the income criteria so will now try to convince her to apply- cross fingers!0

Am I missing something, seems that the online self assessent only asks if u want to transfer the allowance to your spouse; doesn't ask if you want to claim the allowance from your spouse . She had applied for 2015-2016, and I received an udated tax code for 2015-2016 (and for 2016 - 2017) on March 23, too late for my March payslip. Not obvious how I will receive the £212, I expected to be able to include it in my self assessment.0

Ah, part of the eligbility is that you do have to be living together (apart from in certain circumstances) so we'd not be eligible0

I can't find any reference to that restriction; where did you get it from?Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
