So my wife is due on maternity leave this coming July, its possible she will be under the 11k limit during the time she has off - however we are not 100% as she may only be having 9 months off.

Is it best to apply next year after the maternity leave has finished and she a received her P60 for that year? That way we will 100% know what she has earned?

    That's what I would do.
  • My wife retired through ill health 4 years ago but now officially retired through age, I worked full time until now as from the 8th April 2016 I will be made redundant, will I be able to claim tax back for the time I worked and wife was retired? I have tried claiming tax back in the past and always told was not due anything. I always seem to have problems with tax office, as an example, I had a small pension due when I reached 65 however pension company got birth dates wrong 1945 instead of 1954, I was sent a payment to my bank account by mistake and took ages for me to arrange bank payment sent back to company, 2 years later got a large tax bill for payment which was returned, had loads of problems as pension company reported payment issued but not payment returned. I have never had much luck with tax, always paid PAYE through employers.

Marriage Allowance only started in April 2015, the 2015/16 tax year.

If you meet the eligibility criteria then you can apply for that year but not any further back than that.

    Hi,
I called HMRC today to claim Marriage Allowance and was told that they did not send out cheques.
Can anyone tell me if this is correct?
    Thanks

I've not registered for this yet.
I work full time PAYE, my wife only earns Carers allowance.
We both receive rental income, therefore both do online self assessments each year.
I've just had a first stab at my tax return, and there's a question on there about whether i want to tranfer allowance to my spouse. Does that mean they'll deal with this for us through our tax returns? effectively reducing my yearly tax bill, or will i/we still get our tax codes changed and i'll get it through my paye job?

  • Just telephoned as I wanted a cheque lump sum payment and I've been told we've been accepted for MA for 2016/17 but for it to be backdated, my husband has to call back later this month when they will have access/confirmation of his tax from last year (apparently it will be available from his employer then). Sadly we're about to go on to an IVA or DMP so chuffed to bits with this little bit of joy! :j

If you apply for MA for this tax year (2016/17), it will change both of your tax codes for the year. One will go up by 110 and the other will go down by the same amount.

If you also apply for it to be backdated to last year (2015/16) the recipient should receive a cheque for £212. If the donor had taxable income in 2015/16 above £9,540 (£10,600 - £1,060) then some tax may be payable by the donor.

You can ask for your tax code to be changed if you wish. As you already complete a self assessment, it still needs to go into self assessment either way.
