Are Computers Using Vista Becoming Obsolete

I'm using Vista and Opera browser very happily. For the odd site that doesn't work well with Opera (such as some Google products, Gumtree etc) Chrome is quick and easy to install.
Once Vista becomes decrepit I'll put a version of Lubuntu or Mint on it. I have a > 7 year old PC that has Lubuntu on it and it runs quickly enough for web, youtube, openoffice word processing etc.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
I don't EVER use IE. It's too buggy, too non-standard, too insecure, too slow, and generally too horrible.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

Like Cordie I have an Inspiron 530 (Service Tag C4IFD3J) This has Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6660 @ 2.40 Ghz. with 2.0 GB RAM. I now use Firefox almost completely. I find Chrome too intrusive and ad-linked. Agreed that IE9 is almost useless, but can still use it occasionally and have no problems logging in to MSE. What I have noticed is that despite trying every cleaning utility known to man in an effort to speed it up, the PC takes ages to boot up first thing. After about 30 minutes (presume when it is warmed up) it runs OK. Any suggestions for speedier boot up would be welcome. Only used for browsing, email etc. Have 185GB of hard drive memory empty. As a non-techie, any advanced processes are really beyond me (very senior silver surfer) so simple advice only would be appreciated. I know I should really ditch it but for the amount I use it it is hardly worth buying a new one. I also have a low cost Acer laptop about 4 years old, with a slow processor and not much memory, this runs Windows 7 but is just as slow booting up! Fortunately my fairly new Moto G phone is lightning fast in comparison and I use that much more!!!!I have a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop computer the os is Vista and I'm using IE 9, I know that I cannot update it any further but am now having problems accessing and using some websites e.g. I can no longer log-in to this forum in IE I have to use Firefox.

Often a clean install will sort things out. Do you have any data that you wish to save?0 -

Which BIOS version running on the ACER? How much RAM installed?
If no specific model number for the PC, we need the actual Motherboard designation.0 -

Vista Acer is Celeron M 520 @ 1.6 GHz, 2 GB RAM; don't know about the BIOS but whatever one it came with.
Lubuntu PC is Sempron 3000+ 1.6 GHz, 1 GB RAM, Asus M2V-MX motherboard; don't know about the BIOS but whatever one it came with.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

You should check both and get back to me. Usually shown on boot up.
But in general, you should update your Aspire 5310 BIOS to the latest version There are two options there. One to flash through Windows and the other via DOS on a Bootable USB drive. I prefer the using a USB drive, as it bypasses the variables of Windows.0
