Are Computers Using Vista Becoming Obsolete
Comments
-
Thanks for all your replies I'll try and combine all my answers in one post.
I downloaded Chrome before Firefox and I had problems with it, on checking some forums it seemed to be a common problem with computers using Vista.
On Clickworker there are some tasks where I have found there is no option but to use IE, I tried again yesterday using Firefox but failed.
I really need to be able to update my IE so this is what I need to investigate further as there now seems to be differing opinions here to what I should do next.
As I am sure it is obvious I am not computer literate and that tends to make you paranoid so could I just get confirmation that it is OK to give out my Service Tag.
Thanks for the tip on logging in I'll try it next time.0 -
the service tag is no more (in laymans terms) than a list of numbers/letters that tells you the maker , the model and a list of parts fitted inside it , if you say its a "wizzyfange super 1000m" , they could have made and sold that model with different motherboards and CPUs etc , the service tag will tell us which model it is
you would probably have problems getting bits for your car if you just said "golf" the service tag tells you the model , engine type manual/auto and even number of doors etc0 -

Morning. You all noticed Windows 7 is out of mainstream support and hence 'obsolete' as of about 5 months ago right? But is being supported under current lifecycle plan until at least 2020.
Sure there's a few years of "critical security fix only" extended support see above, but it'd just be silly to go out and buy/deploy Windows 7 now No, not really. Better to go 8.1 (why? W7 works, is supported and has the same update path as 8/8.1 but is more useable in the meantime) and plan on 10 if you need to upgrade a Windows client OS unless you have solid and specific reasons not to because W8.x is poo. And especially if advising someone who needs to ask the question.
Think I've covered the salient points above

......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Love It ^^
In answer to OP, the answer is yes ..
Your vista machine will take Windows 7 , which is fantastic, as opposed to win 8.x - which is garbage

Sidenote - After looking at your service tag , Dell don't officially support windows 7 on this machine.
And as such, do not provide drivers.
So if you do decide to update to Win 7 , then shoot me a PM and I will point you at the correct drivers to use

^^ there u go

Thanks NiftyDigits and AndyPix but I think the possibility of me being able to move to Windows 7 has disappeared if Dell doesn't support it on my computer. I've looked at NiftyDigits 'Windows 7 Drivers' and the whole issue is completely beyond me, I would never have the confidence to go ahead.
Whilst I am showing my complete ignorance if I did look into getting a new desktop would I need to buy a new monitor or would my current one work with a different computer.

It looks difficult, as you have no guide yet. Within the guide would be how to install the Drivers...ludicrously simple.
The most difficult part is backing up your data....which isn't difficult at all.0
