Are Computers Using Vista Becoming Obsolete

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop computer the os is Vista and I'm using IE 9, I know that I cannot update it any further but am now having problems accessing and using some websites e.g. I can no longer log-in to this forum in IE I have to use Firefox.

Does this mean my computer is becoming obsolete or is there any software I can buy that will allow me to update IE. I sometimes use sites like Clickworker where you need to use IE so it isn't always possible to use another browser.

I doubt there are any sites that specifically need IE these days. I got on clickworker with chrome no problem. If you have any problems with sites then chrome UA spoofer is useful.

IE9 is still supported on vista by microsoft as it's the highest version it will take. Windows Vista will reach its end-of-support date in 2017. Just use another compatible browser. Your laptop is fine.

I hung onto Windows XP for years purely because of how crap Vista was, then when Win7 came out I waited years again until I was sure it wasn't just a !!!!!!! child of Vista.

Just use other browsers, Firefox is pretty stable right now.

I use Firefox in preference to IE, so that shouldn't need to be a consideration.

I think that the computer itself is running a Core2Duo processor, which is some way from the forefront of technology these days. But if all you do is surf the internet and do email it should be OK (unless you visit sites with loads of Flash, which can eat CPU).

As far as Vista goes, I'd say Windows 7 is better, and is probably a viable upgrade for that computer, if you can get it cheap. Windows 7 would allow you more recent browser options.

But if you're happy with the computer as it is, then just use Firefox.

Try using the mse login and quick reply button rather than the main login to mse button, it's the web design at fault, not IE9. Ad blockers and add-ons can also cause problems if you have any installed - Tools, manage add-ons.

2% of those surveyed loved the new design apparently, so it's staying

Most computers that run Visa will run Win 7. You don't need a new pc you need a new OS.
  • It took me a while to get used to Vista and to me it's good. IE9 is crap and MS have suddenly realised it too. I use Firefox, much more secure and faster.

"obsolete"? - maybe in terms of it's not the "latest and greatest" spec, but perfectly useable with W7 on it ;)

Morning. You all noticed Windows 7 is out of mainstream support and hence 'obsolete' as of about 5 months ago right?

Sure there's a few years of "critical security fix only" extended support, but it'd just be silly to go out and buy/deploy Windows 7 now. Better to go 8.1 and plan on 10 if you need to upgrade a Windows client OS unless you have solid and specific reasons not to. And especially if advising someone who needs to ask the question.
