Sounds about right given the work required and make/model of vehicle. Be much cheaper and not too difficult to tackle yourself. I recently did the rear brakes on my mk5 Golf (same brakes as your A3 basically) and it wasn't difficult as long as you have a few tools (rear callipers wind back meaning a special tool is often needed, although a new calliper will be wound back already).

Callipers can be expensive as there's a surcharge, though you'll get this refunded if you return the old part to be refurbished (where you bought it will take the old one back!). The average cost of a rear calliper is about what you were charged and it'll be a refurbished unit (hence the surcharge!), although I paid £35 for a brand new one. I've never heard of the make, but my car has done 170,000-miles and if the calliper seizes after say 10,000-miles, although premature, I'll just put another cheap one on it!

I don't think I'm brave or have the skill to tackle such a crucial system as the brakes. The only thing I ever do myself is change the oil and oil filter every 5-6 months using a syphon and the air filter once a year.

The Garage seems to have a good reputation online, they're trusted members of Good Garage Scheme, Which? and Checkatrade. So I have some confidence in them not overcharging me.

The other calliper on the rear right, which they managed to unstick themselves- I didn't actually notice any symptoms on that side whilst driving. Is fixing the calliper something that takes a while and a reason to charge extra?

    The Good Garage Scheme

Put simply, the word "scheme" is more relevant than "good garage".

Less than six months ago darkmatter admitted he couldn't do that having just bought a siphon and took the car to a garage for an oil change.

No more lies you said.

Oh and he couldn't get the filter off.

I personally wouldnt fit anything other than genuine manufacturers brake parts to my car and the only place i would buy them is from a ford main dealers

I would not buy brake parts or Fake parts off e bay and i wouldn't buy £2.60 far east import parts

on my car when it comes to brakes it is more life saving than money saving

    What model?

It's a TDi S Line, but with all the S Line bits replaced with SE bits.

OP could buy his Yaris back as they didn't have rear brakes..

So you haven't changed the oil yourself using a sphone every 5-6 months have you?

At best you've done it once because last time, a couple of months ago it was done at the garage.

You said you'd stop this crap darkmatter.

Oh for gods sake this isn't a thesis where every line and detail have to be scrutinised. Yes my oil has been changed every 6 months but since I have bought my sypon which was around 6 months ago I'm going to continue changing the oil every 5-6 months myself
