Can you get a false-positive reading on a pregnancy test?

Hi all,
To cut a long story short, I have just taken a home pregnancy test on the advice of my doctor which came out as positive
Are there times where a positive is actually wrong?
Cycle messed up due to coming off implant etc, so have no idea about dates etc.

Sounds like you may be pregnant hun.
I think you need to do at least one more test to be sure... preferably two.cooeeeeeeeee :j :wave:0 -
Nope. The test detects a hormone that the body only produces when you're pregnant.
You can get a false negative (if it hasn't picked up the presence of the hormone yet) but not a false positive.0 -
It's very, very rare to get a false positive, because the test reacts to the HCG hormone which is only present on pregnancy. I believe some fertility medicines MIGHT make it react as they contain HCG, so unless you are currently taking them, it's highly likely you are indeed pregnant.
Test again in the morning to confirm.0 -
Thanks all, will do another in the morning.
What would it mean if it was negative in the morning? :-/

False negatives fairly common
False positive very rare
Your doctor thinks your pregnant, u have a positive test.
Getting a negative one in the morning would mean very little. It's highly likely your pregnant.
Uhm, congrats? :S0 -
It won't be negative in the morning..0

There are other things that can cause BHCG secretion but they are rare enough to make a false positive very unlikely.
Congratulations!Current debt: M&S £0(£2K) , Tesco £0 (£1.5K), Car loan 6K (paid off!) Barclaycard £1.5K (interest free for 18 months)0 -
Yes, happened to me. But it was an evaporation line that appeared after I'd left it longer than you're meant to. False positives are rare and usually occur either because the test is faulty or has been used wrongly. Odds are you're pregnant, but test again tomorrow. I think most women usually double check when they get a positive test anyway!0

id say the morning test will be the same... positive..
with the technology now adays its very rare to get a false positive...xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
As long as you read it within the specified time (usually 10mins) and you haven't had any fertility meds to make you ovulate then you are pregnant.0
