My mother knew her own Grandparents as 'Nanny & Daddums', which she thought was very childish - I think it's lovely - but she insisted that I call my Grandparents 'Grandma & Grandad' followed by their surname to distinguish between sets. Neither of my Grandmas liked this, and my Dad's mum in particular used to complain about it, because all her other Grandchildren called her 'Nana' and I wasn't allowed to.
Curiously, my mother also insisted in me calling her 'Mom' instead of 'Mum', and I was bullied at school because of thatGot my own back now though, I call her 'Mother' and she hates it!

I called my grandma grandma (no name attached) and my 4 year old call my parents grandma and grandpa (no name attached) - which was bonma and bonpa when he was little. He only has the one set so there is no confusion. When we do refer to my husbands late parents we call them grandma 'name' etc. WHen he was little and my grandma was alive we used to call her grandma 'name' with my son - although she was a great grandma.0

I'm called Omi (explanation - half-German blood!) and OH is called Pops (as in GrandPops). Collectively known as "OmiPops" as in 'can we stay with "OmiPops"!..... Felt far too young to be called Grandma, Granny & similar & Nanny/Nan etc reminded us of goats!
My grandparents were known as Granny & Gramps or Granny England and the German set known as Oma & Opa or Granny Germany, depending upon whom we were talking to. Greatgrandparents (we're known for our longevity!) known as Oma "surname" or Granny "surname".
OH's parents known as Bonma (she's Belgian) and Grandad Paddy (Irish), and DD's in-laws called GanGan and Granfey - I guess the kids called the shots there!
Advice is - whatever you and the kids feel comfortable with - think 10 years down the line when you're out & about together and DG is shouting "Nanny....." or whatever....Love, Peace & Harmony (can all be free !!):A  :A0 -
My kids have my mum/stepdad - nanny & grandad 'down the road' (we used to live 9 houses away),my dad is known as grandad London (as lives in London) then they have my nan who's 91, (their great nan) Nanny London (lived in London til 8 months ago, now lives in same area as us. Kept the london on her name as silly to change it!) , Hubby's parents are known as Nanny + Grandad P, first letter of their surname, hubby's Nanna who's 87 is known as nanna. My step-grandparents (again in their late 80's) are known as Great Nanny and grandad (surname).

My daughter has always called my by my first name (long story...) and although I've tried to get my three grand daughters to call me grandmother/grandma or something similar, I've never succeeded. Tried to intruduce "buba" (short for babushka in yiddish), but they hated that, so I've given up now.All Art is the transfiguration of the commonplace

My husband is half Welsh (but has never spoken the language) and my daughter thus a quarter and her new baby an eighth Welsh. Does anyone know if there's a nice welsh name for Grandma ? I quite like the idea of that....0

My children have a granny+grandad, Grandma+grandpa, nan+pops, great-nan, and nan-nan+grandad mac...think thats it!!`Save a little money each month, and at the end of the year, you'll be suprised at how little you have.0

My daughter couldn't bear the use of Grandma or Gran (both conjured up real people for both of us) and decided that her children would invent something cute. They didn't, so we're known by our names (I suspect that it has something to do with the fact that it infuriates her MIL!).
Every so often I ask them (4 and 2) whether they'd like to call me GrannyWendy, and they always consider it politely before saying 'no thank you'.
I don't feel strongly about it either way, rather to my surprise.0 -
When my eldest cousin (first grandchild) was little he was adamant that if one set of grandparents were called Grandma and Grandad then his Nana's husband must be called Nandad (unbeatable child logic)! Thus all 8 of their grandchildren grew up with a Nana and Nandad. It wasn't until I was about 8 and made a comment about them at school and everyone laughed that I realised that not everyone had a nandad! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
In fact I adored my Nandad and still can't say the name without feeling a warm rush of love.“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”
