My lot have only ever had Grandmas and Grandads, like I did, but they were distinguished by 'with' and 'without the doggies', whereas I used their surnames.
Now they are London and Newbury, because the doggies have died. There are still cats where there used to be dogs, but they don't impact on children the way the dogs used to.
Plus the children are now all taller than their grandparents and quite capable of working out where we've got to go to see them.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I became a grandmother in May and my co-grandmother already has two grandsons, so I asked my daughter what she gets called so I could not be that,, but I think it varies. Then my other daughter said 'I think you should be Miffy' I don't care what I am (except nan or nanny, which I hate) so am trying Miffy, which seems a bit artificial. But my family all go in for silly names which change all the time, so I expect something better will evolve. (I hope anyway)0

I think sometimes these things can be "regional".
I only knew one of my grandmothers and she was always "Gran". That was what she wanted. She was a Yorkshire woman. However, I grew up in London where all my friends referred to their grandmother as "Nan". They made fun of me if I said "Gran".
When I had children, my mother insisted on being "Granny". I gave this some thought when I was to become a grandmother myself 4 years ago and didn't want Granny as that was my mum. Now I live in Norfolk where most people seem to use "Nanny" but that reminds me of goats!
So, just like my own grandmother, I am "Gran". Norfolk people I work with talk about my grandson and refer to me as his Nanny which makes me cringe.
My husband comes from Aberdeen where his grandmothers were both Grandma (followed by their surname to avoid confusion).0
