Another vote for a mac. I agree they're overpriced but consider buying them refurbished/secondhand. As regards obsolescence, i've been running a 14-year old model but migrating to a second-hand macbook now (it can run versions of spotify, skype, office etc. but dropbox dropped support only last week).

Got my dad a mac 15 years ago as its intuitive and not prone to malware.

I've an iMac in the family with OS X Yosemite. Bought used but with high spec options.

Generally happy with it. These are not available without highly reflective screens however, so not good facing away from a window.

What I find odd about OS X is, installing and uninstalling programs. Unlike the step by step Windows installer wizards I'm used to, and the equally straightforward uninstall steps for Windows programs, on a Mac opening a DMG the wondering where it went seems very primitive. And to this day I've not worked out how to understand if I've uninstalled a program properly or just deleted it's files in OS X.

One interesting thing I found out recently is that I can run some legacy Windows programs under a (free) thing called WineSkin, e.g. I can run good 'ol Paintshop Pro on the Mac now.

The DMG (disc image folder) makes life easy. You simply drag and drop the application into the Applications folder. Then "eject" the DMG. Job done. (I normally drag the DMG to my own "Installers" folder on a backup drive in case I need to use it again. Alternatively, if it's easily downloaded, simply trash it.)

As for uninstalling, you simply drag the Application out of the Applications folder into the trash then empty the trash.

Uninstall Apps are available but I've never needed to use one of those listed here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=12527023&postcount=6

It's seldom necessary get rid of "remnant" files. They do no harm and usually take up negligible space.

The only time I have used one was the App's own uninstaller, supplied with (for example) a document scanner or an Adobe App.

OSX is different in many respect but it's often simpler, once you get used to "drag and drop" and the fact that it's easy to have several windows open simultaneously and to position them anywhere on the screen.

Macs are great for one thing, and one thing only: PRODUCTION.
Whether it be music creation or mixing, video editing, graphic design, they are brill at all that stuff.

    Web browsing?
    Playing games?
    Playing videos?
    Storing photos?
    Windows!

And I'm browsing on mine, before I look at the hundreds of photos of the grandchildren.
