Whiney whistle noise from car at lower speeds?

Oh yes, that'll be based on your experience of not owning one, right?

All of which turned out to be lies.

You are such a massive bell-end. Grow up.

Well, I bet you were one of those people in their M cars driving fast on public roads. After all you did actually own a BMW M3.

Update- I left my car with the garage this morning and got a phone call to say the discs and pads will need replacing. Also the calliper was stuck as well. I have been quoted £280 plus VAT for both rear discs and pads. Does this sound right?
  • I don't know if this tale of my Ford Seirra, bought new in 1987 will be of any help.

It was brand new, and from day one there was a whining noise from the rear when driving at more than 40mph. Over a period of a couple of months, the Ford Dealer replaced: Propshaft, half shafts, differential, brake hubs, rear tyres, all to no avail. The whine remained.

Then, one evening, my mother in law was sat in the back of the car and I said "Wait for the whine" and it duly arrived at 40mph. My mother in law turned round and said "The noise is coming from the aerial." I stopped the car, pushed down the aerial, and the whine was gone!

Ford replaced the aerial and no more problem.

skittles - the useful advice you were looking for was - handbrake on, in gear. Jack up the left rear wheel. Handbrake off. Try to turn the wheel with your hands. If it's sticky, gratey, friction-y. rather than just heavy, then your caliper is sticking (take off and clean and lube can solve) or the drum is binding. Garage seems to have diagnosed that everything needs done. If that's so, and it's probably not, then that's a fair price. Must be done on both sides though of course.

For years I've driven all of my cars in exactly the same way. Progressively. That doesn't necessarily mean at high speed, as progress is dependent on vehicle performance, traffic conditions, weather conditions, road type, visibility, environment, and other hazards.

It also certainly does NOT mean aggressively, or in a bullying manner.

For driving 'fast' I prefer closed circuits or airfields, my favourites being Snetterton and Croft for both cars and motorbikes, and thanks to my RAF pals, RAF Leeming for bikes as well.

When you say progressive, do you mean a gentle and linear acceleration? The M3 is certainly not designed to be driven in that manner, it's designed to be driven hard and fast. You wouldn't have bought the M3 to granny it around.

Also, I'm sure you've taken your M3 to over 100mph speeds on the motorways-which by the way is illegal .

I personally drive my high mileage 'shitbox' A3 TDI in a very gentle manner and never exceed public speed limits. That said, I do try and 'exercise' the turbo to avoid any sticking vanes by flooring it every now and then but when I do this I still don't exceed the speed limits-I'm just accelerating hard, which I'm sure you've done in your mighty BMW M3 many times

Especially when it's no better than a Vauxhall Astra, and inferior to a Toyota Auris.

Also, I don't really appreciate you calling my car a 'shitbox.' It has nearly 200k miles and I'm proud it has managed to do that. It's still comfortable, reliable and has a fairly decent interior with some extras like cruise control, parking sensors and automatic headlights/rain wipers. This is money saving forum afterall and people should be looking at this as an example. I'm doing basic servicing myself (air filter, oil filter and oil) using an oil extraction syphon. I change the oil every 4-5 months using ONLY fully synthetic Castrol Edge VW 507 oil and I believe this is the reason why it's still on its original turbo. T

The reason why I'm saying this is because I've saved a lot of money thus far and I don't think my car is a 'shitbox' there are much worse cars that maybe newer but drive worse than my car. Also, maybe other people can learn from this if they too want to save. Unfortunately, 'BeenThroughItAll', not all of us can afford to buy the mighty BMW M3's like you did. I love the BMW M3 but I cannot afford it.

That was a BMW 325ci, which is significantly different to even the E36 M3. And I did say the 325ci I drove must have had a fault.

No. Far from it. Making progress is about matching the driving style to the conditions, as I said. Sometimes that will mean achieving the posted limit as quickly as possible, other times it will mean driving with the flow of majority traffic.

Who said it was? I don't 'granny' around in any of my cars.

Why would you assume that? I haven't been over 100MPH on a public road in the UK in a car for many years. In fact, the last time I can remember doing so was in my Rover 220 Coupe Turbo on the A14 in 2001. I have driven most of my cars at well over 100MPH on trips across Germany, however.

I drive according to the conditions, as stated.

I can call it whatever I like, it's imaginary. Maybe if you'd not wasted so much time with your pointless games I'd treat you and your car with a bit more respect; but since you've proven time and time again to be nothing more than a lying, time-wasting, childish troll, why the hell should I treat you with any more respect than you've treated me and the rest of the forum members whose time you've wasted?

Your lack of honesty and integrity demonstrates that you have no respect for us, so I'm afraid you'll get that same lack of respect paid back in spades, sunshine.
