Would letting the policy lapse have the same outcome? Would charges still be brought as your not cancelling
Charges are for cancelling the policy. If you're happy with the premium and service they supply stay with them.
They hiked the price up 20% from 2019 to 2020. I know I haven't got a pay increase of 20% since last year.

Not sure what your pay increase has to do with anything. Sometimes certain costs rise unrelated to salaries.
I would suggest shopping around and checking if it’s still good value.
i haven’t yet seen anything better for a couple with multiple vehicles for “platinum” cover I.e. at home, rescue, recovery and onward travel.
if there are any I’d be interested to know.

Thanks, but I I’ll take a look and actually read them. Reviews sometimes reveal unreasonable people so I will read but not just take it at face value.

EDIT: yup as I thought lots of completely unreasonable complaints about auto-renew which is a common thing these days

I know that auto-renewal can be a problem and I also fumed at price increases over the last years, but I've always received good service from them - had to call them out just before Easter (flat battery - now there's a surprise :/ )  they were very helpful on the phone and the truck arrived within 30 mins.  Observed social distancing - got me started and gave some advice - very pleased with them.

I don't really understand how autorenew can be a problem.
I put a date in my diary (everyone has a phone these days) and call them if I want to lapse.
I always get either a letter, email or I take name and date so recordings can be pulled if necessary.
I have never had a problem in over 30 years.
Most of the "problems" with auto renew are from people not reading their post or ignoring issues (I say this after many decades of being on forums).
Have their been any genuine issues with auto-renew? or people just don't like it?
If you don't like it then find a company that doesn't do it or accept it and put a note in your diary a month beforehand.
It really should not be an issue to diarise anniversary dates these days when every phone and computer has a calendar.
  • I've no issue with AutoAid.  I've been with them for 12+ years and called them out for the first time last December.  (My catalytic converter was stolen.)  Breakdown truck arrived within 15 minutes and my car and I were taken directly to the local garage of my choice.  However, their prices have gone up and a price comparison site gives plenty of choice ('Rescuemycar', ''covermybreakdown', 'greenflag' etc) at about half of Autoaid's price.  Your thoughts would be appreciated!

Seriously, £30 for multiple person, multiple vehicle, home start, etc.? I did have a quick look at a comparison site but it wanted too many personal details.
    N.B. It's still MSE's top recommended https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/car-insurance/breakdown-cover/
2kWp Solar PV - 10*200W Kioto, SMA Sunny Boy 2000HF, SSE facing, some shading in winter, 37° pitch, installed Jun-2011, inverter replaced Sep-2017 AND Feb-2022.

Due to Corona, me and my wife are off the road, so not going to renew - due today actually!
I got an email from them about 6 weeks back that said I could turn off auto renew - which I did:
"If you do not wish to take up the advantage of automatically continuing your policy, then please visit our website at https://secure.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/autorenew.aspx and follow the instructions displayed on screen or call us on 01708 361 637"
It was very easy and I got an email to say "your policy will not be automatically renewed".
Hopefully that will be it and I won't be charged anything.
I plan to go with them again once I'm back on the road. It is a bargain, even at £60, for full cover. I did notice on the MSE site that they want documentation to prove the spouse/partner is legit within 7 days. I don;t have any of the documentation listed on the MSE site and the AutoAid site doesn't mention this requirement at all. Anybody else needed to send proof of partner?

"AutoAid are an award-winning UK car breakdown service and are highly recommended by The Money Saving Expert."
My policy with them expires on 17th April.  So far (2nd April) I have received SIX identical emails from them at about three-day intervals suggesting I renew at £59.99, the previous year's figure being £48.31.
Since I and my car will be self-isolated at home for the foreseeable future, there doesn't seem to be a need for such an award-winning and highly-recommended service, particularly when one reads recent Trustpilot reviews...

I actually received a total of ELEVEN identical emails from them at approximately three-day intervals asking me to renew, then a phone call after the renewal date asking if I wanted to renew.
    No, I didn't.
