For some users, calling one of the following services to make mobile calls make work out cheaper than call1899. They use 0871 numbers which on Virgin Mobile, for example, cost 15p a minute at all times; this compares to their 35p a minute charge to call other networks. I've had a look on the web to get prices for 0871 on other networks' PAYG and the info is not readily available other than a whopping 40p a minute on T-Mobile, so you may need to phone them up to get the cost.

There are other similar services out there.0 -
The whole question of 0871 from a mobile is a minefield. Are you absolutely sure that Virgin only charge 15 p a minute to 0871 have you tried it,and checked your balance. I was under the impression the 15p was only to 0870 numbers.PF.0

read Martins post about overide & the company Swiftnet...
ive been using Swiftnet for a long time on my orange dialing an 0800 & my t-mob by dialing a 0208 number [free with minutes]
but i didnt go direct with Swiftnet .. i joined via a re-seller who gave me far better rates!!
they're on 0845 108 0191
much better (& dont charge any thing for the 0800 access - s/net chge 3p!)0 -
Does anyone know if the mobile override works for PAYG Orange customers? Or is it just contract junkies?0

i did not like how martin said that telco was a smaller company and was slower in getting a new number up when there old 0800 access was blocked.
I have been with telco for years (5+ i think) and found out that they are the cheapest (as i dont have a BT landline) and as soon as orange block the latest access number i have never known of telco to be delayed. I just phone up customer services, get the new one and presto. :j
i wonder how much investigation goes into his weekly newsletters??? :mad:0 -

i am sure its just contract ppl. If you can dial a 0800 number from a PAYG and dont get charged for it...then its free. But almost sure that PAYG ppl pay for the free calls0 -

I read that it was in the uk.telecom.mobile newsgroup. For example:
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uk.telecom.mobile/msg/ea794565407e2be8?dmode=source&hl=en
I have made a test 0871 call and can confirm that a 1 minute call cost 15p (well, 16p - I may have gone just over a minute!) and it is listed as National Toll Rate which Virgin list at 15p/min:
19-May-05 . . . 14:46:19 . . . 08719991414 . . . National Toll Rate numbers . . . 0.16
There's a longer list of providers at:

ive been with Swiftnet [0845 108 0191] since 2000'ish and theyve never changed their 0800 access number from orange mobiles!0

Thanks Toosts most helpful. I wonder if they charge 0844 at 10p a minute!!
Mobile Overide 0800 only works Orange Contract Phones Burlz.PF.0 -
In reply to your question pricefighter, calls to 0844 from Virgin is also 15p per minute (unfortunately). I have tried it (thinking that it may have been 10p as it is closer to a local toll rate number) but no difference....0
